I want to put one of those turbo-trainer DVDs on an iPad but all the tutorials seem to use 3rd party software, is there a simple way of doing it?

Ta!

Doesn't really get much simpler than Handbrake imho

Point it to your DVD and click on 'start'. Add the resulting mp4/m4v file to your iTunes library and copy it over to th'iPad

Thanks Rocketman, does it maintain the interactivity of the DVD?

No, but you can rip individual chapters.

Nice one, I'll give it a whirl... I'll have no excuse for not doing some intervals now! :o)

Just another quick Q, which files should I be ripping? BUP, IFO, VOB etc?

(sorry, clueless muppet!)

On a mac, just point handbrake at the DVD and it will pick up the files it needs automatically.

I'm selecting the DVD, but the "Start" button remains shaded/unclickable... Any ideas?

Have you clocked on the browse button to initate the save as dialogue?
Also I seem to remember that some folk have had to download different codecs

Have a look here - http://lifehacker.com/5888078/vlc-20-breaks-handbrake-dvd-ripping-heres-how-to-fix-it

Reading the user guide, it says it won't work with commercial DVDs that have copyright protection... I suspect that might be the problem...

Sigh

Can you download a copy from somewhere else instead? Might be easier in the long run.

@sibboleth - Handbrake or RipIt, oh and once you start you'll want to buy an external 1 or 2 terrabyte external drive to keep all your movies on ...

Jambalaya, I've tried Handbrake and Mac The Ripper, but I think the problem is that the DVD is copyright protected/encrypted... Any ideas how it can be hacked? Just want to be able to run training DVDs on my iPad...

If Handbrake won't rip your DVD, use DVD Shrink to extract the VOB files, then tell Handbrake to use them instead of the DVD.

Good luck!

Can you just create an ISO image of the DVD (which should copy it all, including the copy protection) then play that on the ipad? Files will be bigger, but should work (assuming you can get a media player that will handle image files).

Install DVD43, that should un encrypt the DVD for you. I use AVPlayerHD on my ipad, I find that works well for wirelessly transferring and playing DVDs on it.
