As the title pretty much.
I have a sparkly new phone and am looking to put some dvds on it, but unsure as to what the best format to take it from the dvds.

Mp4 or avi. The galaxy s will take MKV but tbh that's overkill for a phone.

I rip the files straight to pc with dvd fab or similar then use handbrake to shrink to mobile size to save memory space on the phone.

mkv isn't overkill for a phone, at least not if you are recommending mp4.
H264 in mp4 or mkv using handbrake and one of the presets. AAC or mp3 audio.
