I have a 1TB SSD which I presume is SATA that I have in my Windows laptop. I was thinking about getting an external caddy to plug it into the Mac. I probably want USB3 rather than thunderbolt or whatever it is....

Any recommendations for one that's reasonably solid (needs to travel around) and not too expensive?

I have something like this, I don't use it with an SSD though, so I'm not sure how quick they really are.

I wouldn't call it especially portable though...

What kind of SSD? A 2.5" one or just a card (which would need protecting in something)?

We just use an eSATA to USB cable to plug in a 2.5" drive. The docking ones (as above) but with a fan are good for magnetic hard drives to keep them cool, the SSD's don't get anywhere near as hot so the USB lead works fine, otherwise you're just buying exactly the same thing, but with a big plastic box.

That's not really an assumption you can make any more - it could be SATA, it could be M2.

Whatever you have, I've had a couple of IcyBox enclosures that I've used off and on for years without issues - would recommend them as a brand.

Oh and what is to be gained by externally attaching your Windows hard drive to a Mac ( which might need a driver for NTFS ?? ) ?

Assuming you have a 2.5" SATA drive this will do the trick

I have a bunch of assorted Inateck caddies that I use at work and home as I migrate assorted machines to SSD. All seem OK

Being able to store more than the 0.5TB that's built into the machine 🙂

I wonder how good NTFS support is?

Assuming it's going to stay with the Mac, why don't you just format it as HFS?
