I'm not the most tech savvy and am getting confused.  I use dropbox for photo backup from phone and some files.

Currently struggling with space on my laptop drive and when look at it Dropbox is taking up 12GB.  If I delete this locally I assume all remains safe online?  I plan check my dropbox online to make sure that everything on the laptop is there before deleting - will this work?  I can't see any settings in Dropbox to stop it saving stuff to laptop drive too - what am I missing

Thanks, Niall

Don't think that will work. Dropbox is a mirroring backup so it copies what is in the folder on the computer. If you delete stuff locally it'll disappear from the online server too. You can get it back but only up to a certain date.

I think you need selective sync. You can choose which folders to sync locally.

Bugger, thanks - guess need look at what else can delete, don't need that windows folder do I? 🙂

So how do things like Chromebooks work then when they have no storage and its all cloud based?  It makes no sense to me!

Yes, if you have it synced to a folder on your PC to auto backup, it will also purge on destination. You don't have to have it synced to a folder, but then you would have to manually add your new files to your Dropbox webspace by logging in via a browser...

Thanks for that, will check out settings later.

As temporary solution dug out old external drive and dumped 35gb of photos there until I can sort it at weekend.

I've half a memory that I had something similar a while back, and it was Dropbox keeping hold of deleted items rather than actually deleting them.

Google photos will probably be better for what you want, although I'd still keep a local copy somewhere.

Cheers Nick, shall explore options at weekend was bit of an issue when  couldn't save some work last night as drive full so mild panic ensued. Have office 365 subscription too but it seems mirror hard drive files too rather than saving on cloud.

Cheers Cougar that's interesting, must check it out later.

I have been considering ditching my Dropbox for a while since got 365 subscription with 1tb memory so might save some duplication and add a regular back up to external drive too. Most photos from phone so in there too on sd card.
