Anyone had to do this recently? My photo-card expires 24th September, looking on gov.uk site - https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence#more-information says if expires this year extended for 11 months but not clear if this is licence entitlements or photo-card (not sure if there is a difference now like when had paper counterpart)?
Can apply to renew online with UK passport, not possible as am Irish, says can go to post office but in main part of text says you wont get a new photo-card.
Not sure whether to go post office and try, but get no card, or leave it? Have printed out the guidance if need it for evidence later, haven't received a letter telling me need to do it, which in normal times apparently I should have.
Will places (excluding Wetherspoons) accept it as valid photo i.d. if out of date? if needed hire car am I without valid licence - my entitlements are in date, just photo-card expiring?
Yours, confused of Newcastle

I dont know the definitive answer to your question, but there would seem to be no downside to to doing the renewal part at the PO? I would expect most places will accept for photo id unless you no longer look like your picture. Hire cars in UK probably OK (if you are licensed) as they can access the data live from DVLA; overseas more potential for issues.

IIRC driving entitlements do not "expire*, which is to say you do not need to resit any tests. However it is an offence to drive with an expired photo card (outside any Covid special circumstances.

I'm also pretty sure I didn't get a reminder.

* OK, they do eventually, with age.

If your photocard driving license is left to go more than 6 months out of date you can lose your entitlements as the DVLA computer has a habit of deleting old files, a few people I know have had it happen. How that works now is anyone's guess! I'm still waiting for my license to come back with provisional entitlements for HGV from before lockdown, thankfully I didn't send the original off so have been fine for ID.

As for the ID using an out of date card the Challenge 25 instructions I get for my home delivery job is if it's out of date to refuse regardless, that hasn't changed at all as I just checked. Hire companies can check your license online so if you need one take a passport too.

I had this happen to me...I sent my photo license away in March. had it back within 2 weeks, no noticed it was wrong. constructed a cover letter and sent it back, April 20. Then we entered lockdown and I heard nothing. This resulted in my application being complete online despite I have sent it back.
IF YOU NEED TO, MAKE SURE YOU SEND YOUR LICENCE TO THE DLVA VIA RECORDED DELIVERY, THEN YOU HAVE PROOF THAT THEY HAVE YOUR LICENCE / APPLICTION.

I dialled 101 to ask the police where I stood as now my license was out of date. As it stands...if you have an open application with DLVA and have proof - you are allowed to drive without a valid photo as long as you comply with Section 88 of the law.

Google "DLVA INF188/6" - this form explains it all. Also worth looking at Section 88.

Sorry to add this but...
I'm not a professional or telling you to do this, please read the forms and make your own assessment.

When my photo driver’s licence needed renewing a year or two back I went to the PO, because my passport had expired a couple of years before, and they took the photos digitally and did everything online.
Absolutely crap photo, mind - could be practically any middle-age bloke with a beard, I’d struggle to recognise myself from it!
