Anyone know where to find out how much motorway tolls cost in France ?

Are they on the "A" roads or are some "N" routes toll-payable also ?

Cheers.

all route nationals are free, the only toll roads are the motorway. I think the viamitchelin site has details of what the cost is per road. at a high level, it's ~£60 each way to the alps, and saves about 3 hours compared to going via belgium, swizerland etc

Aye, 83 euros for Bilbao to Calais.

Still, better than the non-toll route.

The faster you go the more the toll charges are! but if speed is more important than cost they are fantastic roads.

Shit! Was it 83€? 😥
Much, much better and comfortable stress free drive, even making Paris relaxing.

The toll costs are high but the Toll roads are brilliant
and not overbourne with cars!

I really enjoyed driving to and from the south of France.
Then I got back on the UK road network.. and was ready to scream.

I have been reliably informed that the toll roads are a rip off and the non toll roads are adequate if you are not in a rush.

Recently spent a very enjoyable couple of days getting to and from Morzine - and didn't spend a single euro on tolls. Roads were generally pretty quiet so its possible to achieve a decent average speed - but be aware of the increasing number of roadside speed cameras (usually with good advanced warning signs, but cameras themselves are not as obvious as UK dayglo Gatso boxes).

"[s]usually[/s] mandatory with good advanced warning signs"

They have to put the sign a set distance before the camera. If you get busted you are legally blind 😉

We chose to drive in France over Germany despite the tolls, because the experience was worth it.

I generally find it costs me more in Payage than it does in diesel to drive on French autoroutes. Very poor value as they're no better as roads than UK motorways.

At least driving in N Spain or N Italy you can see where the toll charges are spent as due to the montainous terrain the roads seems to be permanently either on a viaduct or in a tunnel

The road surface isn't any different to the UK but you're paying for a degree of exclusivity, which results in light traffic and a very easy journey.

not all motorways are toll by any stretch i always use N routes as an alternative to tolls. never paid a centime in 30 yrs. ( except once when i strayed into italy by mistake and had to pay to get back into france..)

If they are a bit newer they are more expensive i think. There is a stretch between tour and the normandie coast, not hugely long but 53Euro!

Was not hapy when we got to the toll gate but definitely explains why ther was little traffic on that bit of road.

Stoner - "usually with good advanced warning signs" . . . . always a sign, but not always good - a few signs I spotted were in danger of disappearing behind undergrowth.

Toll roads when working or on a mission to get somewhere, otherwise, I just pick the N routes with the occasional detour onto a toll if the alternative is crappy

Peteimpreza they fine you from point to point using the ticket you get at the start of the road and time you pay the toll to determine your average speed. The fine is then just simply added to your toll cost.

Just got back from Morzine and spent about £100 in total for tolls. The motorways were quick and well maintained. When out at Morzine I was speaking to a guy from Wales who had avoided all the road tolls by taking side roads and had taken 16 hours getting from Calais to Morzine compared to the 7 hours it took our group. The money he saved on tolls was nulled by the extra fuel expense, I recommend just paying the tolls and get there quicker and with considerably less stress.

Did he go via Gibraltar? - that's an awful lot of extra fuel

I recently had a holiday in France with the camper & as this cruises at only aroud the 100kph mark, it was just as fast on the National roads...

But of course it depends a lot on what route you are taking & whether or not there are good National road alternatives.
I imagine from the Calais - Morzine story above there aren't good non-Autoroute options....

He did say he got lost a few times so I've no idea what route he went or what the roads were like

i've done both ways, and from calais the toll is about 8 hours, the non-toll through belgium etc is about 10, and probably 50 miles longer. You do get to fill up in luxomburt where it's cheap though, so the total fuel cost is probably the same as the french way. Both routes have their merits, I found the toll road roadworks, which go on forever very tedius when there's no discount 😀

It's definitely a more fun experience to take N roads though - hands down! But it's significantly slower.
