There's very little in the way of optimism and hope from the RNC, the core message is "people are going to take your guns and stuff away from you because they're socialists, socialism is bad m'kay".

What I'm surprised at is there's zero attempt to expand from their base. They're just reinforcing the 35-40% who will already vote for them (and hopefully give the remainder lots of reasons not to).

I think Trump and his team probably know they will lose the popular vote. But if they can get enough of their "base" out on the day then when the votes are counted they will probably be ahead, at least until the postal votes are counted.

While this is happening they can do absolute everything in their power to stymie the counts, cast doubt on their legitimacy and general try and scupper the entire electoral process.

The orgy of fear being broadcast by Trump and his allies is just a way of weaponising the kind of useful idiots we have already seen protesting against face masks and disrupting BLM protests. It's really not too big a stretch to imagine armed pro-Trump militias turning up at vote counts demanding that they stop counting postal ballots and declare Trump the winner.

...and the BBC is reporting it as though it's a normal political party convention. The only policy position is to support trump (that's a Washington Post link. Actual resolution is here. )

Quite. I had a bit of a twitter spat over the w/e with anti-mask protesters. They claim to love freedom of speech unless someone disagrees with them. I wonder how many post-RNC Covid cases we'll see? I can see Covid keeping some of Trump's supporter base away from the polls. This is why lately we've seen the QAnon conspiracy flying around on messageboards - the idea is to suck a new generation in.

off topic I know but when Hollywood is so short of ideas that they milk comic books dry and reboot 10 year old franchises, no-one has remade '1984'. Surely it'd make a massive splash, boost interest in the book, and a canny 'lefty' director could release in time for the RNC convention or election

Watching the Trump convention on channel 4 news is truly terrifying. The media apparently willingly cooperating in their rewriting of history even more so.

Trumps America resembles a totalitarian state more and more every day.

Q is definitely on the rise again. Lots of videos on TikTok which doesn’t censor it. At least two Q based protests in the UK recently 😳

Pam Bondi accused Joe Biden of lacking integrity: “if you look at his 47 year career on politics, the people that benefitted are his family members”

Hmm.. let’s just ask the other speakers about that shall we? The ones who all seem to have the same surname!

CNN had a great setup where they were showing three star attractions for the evening underneath as she was speaking.
I am curious about why he has gone for such a broad range of speakers. Is it a choice by trump wanting to make it all about him or is it that pretty much every senior republican has sent apologies that they are busy washing their hair?

At least First Lady (not an escort)Melania nailed it with her eloquent and thoughtful speech, she may have had some help with the final edit from Barron. 😉

Interesting HuffPo article on the Hunger Games RNC:

https://huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/white-nationalism-republican-national-convention_n_5f46ac75c5b6cf66b2b20e26

Apparently Mary Ann Mendoza was pulled as a speaker after she urged followers to read “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” and Referencing QAnon. 😳

Other QAnon Republicans are still there though.

So Trump re-tweeted a QAnon post about the "fake" Covid death count from the CDC.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/08/31/trump-tweet-coronavirus-death-toll/

Twitter deleted it as misinformation, but now all of social media is full of conspiracy morons saying "Only 6% of the deaths are actually Covid and they are trying to cover it up"

Incredible!

Then Trump plays for more QAnon votes by talking about "people you've never heard of... people in the dark shadows":

I would say even with make up on he doesn't look well in that vid, a bit gaunt in the face and tired and stressed.

Has he worked out that while social media Can and will censor his bile and bollocks, live reports of his speeches, especially covered by sympathetic media, isn’t/won’t be and can/will be replayed, either in a positive or negative light but it matters little which.

It’s normally a ‘I don’t want to be caught lying to the nation’ internal monologue that stops most world leaders doing this, but that ship sailed and was torpedoed long ago.

I hate to say this, but I think he will get re-elected.

Just can't see Biden swaying enough voters.

The US is on the verge of Civil War.

Frightening stuff.

Just listened the 'the bunker' podcast and I'm slightly reassured.

Re the post RNC polls. Although the polls are showing bidens lead in the swing states is lower, albeit ahead of trump, than Clinton's at the same stage in the last election, there are less undecideds in play (something like 6% as opposed to 17%). So you could interpret that as less movement or less capacity for movement as election draws nearer.

I'm concerned about the debates as Biden comes across as, can I say a bit slow? Which is fair enough given his age but trump has the overconfidence and bluster of someone completely deluded and full of himself which I'm worried could land a few cut through blows on biden. The fate of the world rests on his shoulders after all.

@GrahamS jeez this is scary stuff. In the absence of any credible strategy it's literally just 'the evil communists/blacks are coming for you and everything you hold dear'.

I fear this could get really ugly if it's a close result.

Probably as a result of his stammer.

Agreed - Biden will need to do very well in debates to swing this, but a lot of the core won't shift no matter what.

The US is on the verge of Civil War.

Also agreed - and certain groups seem to be actively pushing for it!

it’s literally just ‘the evil communists/blacks are coming for you and everything you hold dear

Did you watch any of the RNC? The speeches were full on "they want your guns, your unborn babies, your meat, your guns, your truck, your Jesus and your guns".

More than a hint of Hunger Games / DPRK / 1930's Germany.

I think Biden's "problem" will be:

1) being too polite and diplomatic
2) thinking before he speaks
3) his stammer

Trump will interrupt him, talk over him, and use rude pithy retorts that are meaningless but get airtime.

The debates are a pivotal point - but in going with Biden the Dems have gone for a safe pair of hands. And they have had months to guess the tone/approach that Trump will take and come up with a counter.

There is so much they can counter him with - almost too much. Trump is a liar and that is a big weakness he has to carry. He has avoided difficult questions for the last 4 years - in the debates he will have to answer them.

Another cause for optimism is that democrat success relies on turnout and, in a way, the current polls tightening or a relative post RNC bounce (which beggars belief in the circumstances) may well dispel any complacency and could compel casual democrat voters to vote.

Also, biden is well ahead in Florida, more so than Hilary, which is must win. And has the most electoral votes of any swing state (I think)

God knows what ll happen in Wisconsin though. Talk about 'febrile' (election bingo card) Newsnight last night suggested it was a tactical error that biden hadn't gone, or at least was beaten to it by trump

He'll just ignore it or simply repeat the lies, one of the things he's good at is spouting bollocks and keeping a straight face. Unless they have some sort of real-time fact-checking in place during the debate with the moderator able to interrupt the candidates and call-out the bollocks then Trump will just mostly ignore anything Biden says and use it as another opportunity to rile up his base.

You can't win a debate against a complete bullshitter, its like trying to land a punch on a wisp of air.

Biden's best tactic is to stay focused on the points he wants to deliver, remain calm and appear presidential and let Trump bury himself with his free form, barely coherent, stream of consciousness drivel.

True but Biden doesn't need to knock it out of the park. That pressure is on Trump who is behind in the polls. If you go back to the Trump Hilary debates nothing much changed, Trump fans called it for Trump everyone else called for Hilary and they were forgotten within a few days.

I don't think anyone wins any ground at the debate only a massive gaff would swing the dial and they are both capable of that. Biden possibly better advised and more intelligent/capable having the edge but then he often looks older than Trump and so much is on the visuals. The people they are trying to reach (those unsure if or who they will vote for) are largely dead inside.

People know they are being lied to.

In a lot of cases, they are prepared to put up with the lies if they get a little something in return, how else would the evangelical right side with someone trump?

Its getting people to realise its not ok to be lied to is the trick...same for this country.
