His core voters would see tax evasion as a patriotic duty rather than kind of a moral failing. In his election campaign Trump already stated that not paying taxes made him smart. He displays himself to be the kind of crook they would be if they got the chance. They don't get the chance of course.
Hmmmmmmmm - my prediction was that he'd spend the whole 4 years tied up in all the lawsuits/legal issues that he seems to invite via his every action, and that has happened to a degree, but it looks like they've lined-up the juicy ones for the countdown to his election.
I guess this makes sense: voters have a really short memory - it needs to be happening right-now to have an impact at the polls. Plus, it has the benefit of negatively impacting his re-election, but only concluding when (hopefully) he no longer has the power of the office to obstruct and potentially issue pardons.
He's been up to his neck in dodgy dealings his whole life, but I assume he's effectively bought himself immunity via campaign contributions. But suddenly, there's a whole bunch of people who are motivated to take him on, who have years-and-years of ammunition. If he doesn't get re-elected, he's going to prison.
