Edit.... can't be bothered.

I understand now why politics and religion are not discussed among friends/colleagues in the US - if this thread has taught us anything is that some people's view's defy logic, and that it's impossible to have any sort of sensible discussion with them.

Ultimately I think it's a question of intellect and morality. Some people are simply too stupid to understand anything other than what can be condensed into a soundbite ("build a wall", "lock her up", 'drain the swamp" etc etc). I think it's interesting to see who is still supporting Trump after it's abundantly clear that he's morally bankrupt - what does that say about the personal morals of those that continue to support/defend him?

Not mutually exclusive I suppose... one can be both stupid and morally bankrupt. But I do wonder why I would want to continue to engage with them on the internet.

Jeez, anyone seen coverage or read extracts from his speech to the Boy Scout Jamboree? Every time I open Twitter, it's like "oh right, what's he done now?" 😆

Wow, just checked his twitter feed, and he really is spewing now. I'm getting the feeling he's seriously rattled.

Trump: verb intrans. British English vernacular, mildly offensive, synonym for fart.

Trump: noun US English vulgar. Source of the above.

It's easy for things to go over one's head when one lives under a bridge.

This is indeed true; one might hope the constant traffic might drown him out, but it ain't happened yet. 😕
Very rightly too. If they want to insult the leader of the nation then be prepared to get hammered. They can display whatever they wish but just don't go crying foul when they got hammered.

Hmmmm, seems our resident troll doesn't grasp the idea of a democracy, freedom of speech and the First Amendment of the Constitution.
The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, ensuring that there is no prohibition on the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble, or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights.

The Bill of Rights was originally proposed to assuage Anti-Federalist opposition to Constitutional ratification. Initially, the First Amendment applied only to laws enacted by the Congress, and many of its provisions were interpreted more narrowly than they are today. Beginning with Gitlow v. New York (1925), the Supreme Court applied the First Amendment to states—a process known as incorporation—through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Obviously nobody actually read what I say. Did I say they are not allowed to insult?

Of course they are allowed to insult but the problem is what if they get hammered in court etc ... they are going to cry aren't they?

Ya, free speech 1st amendment and all that but they are going to get sue/hammer in the court, so not sure why they are so afraid. Do it, try it, nobody is stopping them.

Silly goose is making a big deal out of nothing. 😆

edit: Narco-state is a narco-state regardless of growth etc. Very corrupted nation.

Done a bit of research, looked into the whole situation and after a lot of soul searching I think I've come to an epiphany Trump is a bawbag.

King biggly bawbag (the empty)
He is going after sessions presumably as a start to firing him and getting somebody who will stop the special prosecuter. Then it's one way to the exit.

Statement from the chairman of the joint chiefs on trans people serving in the military:

“There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President's direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance. In the meantime, we will continue to treat all of our personnel with respect."

My bold but that's pretty forthright from the joint chiefs, especially on a policy that Trump claims came "After consultation with my Generals and military experts" (which apparently doesn't include his own Secretary of Defence)

Given the size of the US Military healthcare budget ($52Bn per annum), $8.4m is a drop in the ocean. Apparently it's a tenth of the amount that the US military spends on Viagra!

It's an attempt to control the conversation. Get the "liberal snowflakes" talking about something other than Russia or healthcare.

And less than the cost to the taxpayer of 3 of Donald's rounds of golf.

It's pretty much accepted that this was a giveaway to a couple of republican senators so that they would vote for his healthcare bill.

Meanwhile, the new boy has flipped his sh*t:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jul/27/anthony-scaramucci-white-house-reince-priebus-steve-bannon

Anthony Scaramucci told an interviewer that Chief of Staff Reince Priebus is “a f*cking paranoid schizophrenic” who will be asked to resign, and that Scaramucci is not like Steve Bannon, the chief strategist, because “I’m not trying to suck my own c*ck”.

Scaramucci then parodied Priebus: “‘Oh, Bill Shine is coming in. Let me leak the ****ing thing and see if I can cock-block these people the way I cock-blocked Scaramucci for six months.’”

Awesome, just awesome 😯

He then tweeted:

“I made a mistake in trusting in a reporter. It won’t happen again.”

Errr, the white house communications director seems confused about what a reporter is/does?

I get it that Trump uses this kind of thing to distract from the actual issues. But this level of chaos can't be good, surely?

Well..... I guess it's entertaining.

One of the most disturbing quotes in that Chump tweet (other than the main purpose, of course) is the "decisive and overwhelming victory" bit: this guy gets his lines from the NFL playbook. Let's hope Chump is removed before he can do any permanent damage.

So todays BBC report on the failed repeal of Obamacare has the following:

'It would have resulted in 16 million people losing their health insurance by 2026, with insurance premiums increasing by 20%, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).'

Isn't the main issue people have with Obamacare that it makes insurance premiums too high for people paying for normal policies?

Am I missing something?

Obama was a black man?

It's an irational hatred of looking after other people (unless it's the tax payer funing you playing golf at your own golf course)
But like many things if you thought giving it was hard try taking it away

Judging by the responses to his latest decrees, it now looks like the standard reaction to whatever 'The Donald's' stream of consciousness delivers, from the Pentagon, Congress and everyone else seems to be "Yeah... whatever....."

And why wouldn't you? He's a huge man-baby with the attention span of a goldfish. So whatever he says today, he'll have either contradicted or forgotten about by tomorrow

yeah we could include the religon angle - how dare people not believe what I do
the greed angle - how dare people be poor
the not enough angle
the rest but none of it really makes much sense

As I understand it one of the other issues is the fact that many in the US have believed a pack of lies about how terrible healthcare and hospitals will be under a semi-funded, cost managed scheme. According to a friends parents, the NHS is a coackroach ridden slum using re-cycled needles and half qualified staff... 😆

So on that basis they are saying 'lets keep hospitals nice for people that can afford it and let the others sort themselves out'.

Pretty much. America has often been dominated by the "survival of the fittest", the pioneering, old West spirit, where if you are struggling it's your own fault so why should we pay to help you? It's the Republican way.

Except that now the republicans aren't necessarily the fittest any more and they are stuck 🙁

I get the impression that the press were holding back a little at first to see if things might actually work out but now there seems to be no limits. The Washington Post today:

"I wish that were hyperbole. The problem is not just that President Trump is selfish, insecure, egotistical, ignorant and unserious. It is that he neither fully grasps nor minimally respects the concept of honor, without which our governing system falls apart. He believes “honorable” means “obsequious in the service of Trump.” He believes everyone else’s motives are as base as his.

The Trump administration is, indeed, like the court of some accidental monarch who is tragically unsuited for the duties of his throne. However long it persists, we must never allow ourselves to think of the Trump White House as anything but aberrant. We must fight for the norms of American governance lest we forget them in their absence."

That the Republican dominated House and Senate cannot seem to function at all, even to pass it's own legislation, cannot go unnoticed, even amongst the most conservative of party and voters.

Well, it bears repeating because it's sort of sadly funny, but the ACA is actually not all that unpopular. Obamacare however is hated. You know it's the same thing, I know it's the same thing, but ACA beneficiaries who hate Obamacare don't know it's the same thing.

Anyone listen to that Chief of Staff twunt on R4 this morning? Basically said that taking away the rights of trans folk from serving in the military (aka being treated as normal human beings) was in their own interests as 40% of trans people have made a suicide attampt and are clearly not suited to such a high pressure role.

Un-****ing-believable.

I think I'd find a behind the scenes/fly-on-the-wall documentary of the current White House more addictive viewing than even GoT.

I enjoyed the West Wing and ever since had the impression that the White House senior staff are very intelligent & hard working (yes I know it wasn't a documentary...).

I like Veep to, but I used to think it's more just about the comedy and the parody element doesn't really have any basis in reality. However my current impression is that Veep is actually a far more accurate portrayal of Trump's White House than the West Wing.

I'm sure generations to come will wonder/debate how it was all allowed to happen

What's quite nice is the sheer volume of serving personnel and vets who're not trans, saying more or less "Yeah I thought it'd be a problem too til I served alongside them and it was all fine. The people who're angriest about it have never served"
