Do ninfan as said above would you personally defend the right of radical Islamic preachers to say their bit?
It appears a bunch of other right to be a racist prick types are getting ready for more free speech rallies in the US. I hope they all leave their car keys at home.

the obvious point you sidestepped rather than egage

Everyone know who has criticised the POTUS and who has supported him

Likewise we know who has criticised fascist racist Nazi [ everyone] and who has not.

Your sidestep shows only your MO[ and you cannot negate the point I made] on here when faced with the irrefutable truth and nothing more.

Your last post is quite odd and i have no idea how to counter it with rational discourse. I shall let the forum decide if that is my failing on yours

On another note - the footage of the protest in Boston was comforting. A handful of right wing campaigners completely drowned out by popular voice. The footage on the beeb* was great - "We can't hear you!"

Trump's answer to all this: "Looks like many anti-police agitators in Boston. Police are looking tough and smart! Thank you."

Make up your own mind. Personally, I've gone from thinking that Trump's a moron/loose cannon, to thinking that a lot of this is more calculated. Not by him, obviously, he's too thick for that. Worrying that there are people as awful as Bannon still on board.

*"Fake news", obvs. I'm sure ninfan/chewkw will have an "alternative" factoid about the size of the crowd 😆

Voltaire is utterley embedded in US culture

oh please, spare us your nonsense. Half the population thought that the Karl Marx phrase "from each according to his needs..." was from of the constitution.

"He didn't say that he'd defend it. That would have been Voltaire's biographer Evelyn Beatrice Hall"

As noted here, the quotation that Mr. Ninfan credits to Voltaire never actually happened. That would be fake news then.

Whilst I accept Voltaire was contemporaneous to the constitution I very much doubt many US citizens can explain him and I personally thought British philosophical thought and legal statutes dating to the Magna Carter had greater influence than French Philosophers in general and him in particular.

As I understand it, the American Constitution is based directly on Magna Carta, and the Supreme Court moved into a new building in 1935 with "Equal Justice Under Law" on its frontage, and on one of its main doors an image of Magna Carta, among other legal references.
https://www.americanbar.org/publications/insights_on_law_andsociety/14/fall-2014/magna-carta-in-the-united-states.html
Seems like Trump has as much patience with what rights the Magna Carta sets out as King John did...

Endgame.

He's managed to sack most of his support, lost his business and arts advisory councils, and is now sitting in the naughty corner being completely ignored by the Republican Majority Leader of the Senate Mitch McConnell and the military who, it seems, are now running the show.

His response is to have one of his little rallies and complain about the media.

What a pathetic dunce the man is.

It's all about clinging onto that core 1/3rd of the vote that will keep the Reps in check at the midterms.

That & he's a preening narcissist, who craves the attention of the arena rallies.
There he can present his own version of reality, where he didn't equate both sides & say that Nazis were fine people, using the language of the alt-right, like 'antifa' shows he's playing to his audience, feeding into the alt-right conspiracy theories & paranoias..
None of which will improve b the lives of the left-behind.

Like it or not Trump is winning. Thats what he believes and what he believes is all that matters (to him), everything else is fake. He'll do two terms and start a dynasty of heredity Trump presidents based on the new constitution thats better and less fake, it will give more freedoms for all to have him and his family forever. Anyone who objects will just dishonest and anti-USA.

"Shutting down the federal government" is another way of saying "Drain the swamp" to his supporters. Another way of looking at it is that aligning the federal government with those opposed to "the will of the people" (i.e. his core support) then they'll see future announcements about rolling back "big government" as a good thing. This despite those institutions being the very ones protecting them against the unbridled power that Trump craves.

Trump maybe draining the swamp but he's replacing it with a cesspit of his own making.

Aye its almost tragic for them

Tied to a clearly unstable person who will pander to the white supremacists - not because he likes them but he appears to need adulation and that matters more than who is doing it- whilst harming his party, his nation and the office he holds.

The Democratic Party are quite they should be all over him calling him out on everything. Instead they are leaving it to a few comics. Politics seems in a bad way in the US.
I'm not sure who said we get the leaders we deserve.
I can see him trying to pass the mantle over to his daughter without an election, do you have to be a senator to be VP?

It's all the fault of those Democrats that he can't shut down the Federal Government. If they weren't being so obstructive everything would be fine.

Basically everything from the Scottish Referendum, Jeremy Hunt vs. Jr Doctors, Brexit, Trump, seems to suggest a sea-change at some point when politicians just didn't need to bother their arse with the truth any more, or that somebody who used to call them out on their lies just isn't doing it any more?

Or is it that the average level of education of the general population is now low enough that significant majorities simply don't have the attention span to follow up sensationalist headlines with some basic scrutiny?

It's genuinely scary. I hope Trump is the apex of it, if nothing else he's been gifted with the levels of self belief necessary to be such a brazen bullshitter...

There was a piece in the guardian today interviewing Trump voters. The vote for him was in pretty much every case, an anti-politics vote. And the more the media and 'the establishment' attack him, the more these disenfranchised people back him

This is the end result of decades of contempt for the 'little people'from the elite of both parties

Same reason we ended up with Brexit. The worrying thing is that 'the establishment' both there and here are still in denial about this self-evident fact. So it then becomes more entrenched. There's no end in sight until those at the top who are so detatched even admit there's a problem

I wouldn't hold my breath

Yup, remember the Fiscal Cliff? The US right was absolutely delighted at the idea of the gubmint being closed, then they started to discover what that would really mean. "Why can't I go to this war memorial?" "It's shut" "That's a disgrace!" "Yep. PS your guys did it". People imagined it'd just mean tax collectors and other ne'erdowells and then it turns out, governments do stuff.

this

its a shame in many ways the people that trump picked were so completely bonkers that they were extremely entertaining, its just going to be Trump himself as the lone lunatic in the white house tweeting his whacky conspiracy theories, which is still enough to keep on ruining his own presidency!

eg hes still able to use a huge hurricane striking texas to pardon his far-right sheriff buddy

It also goes to show how terrible trump is at picking staff, if only voters hadnt believed what they saw on reality tv!

Just finishing two weeks Chez Donald - haven't seen a paper until today, saw no books shops, heard no news on car radio (until today again), currently watching fake CNN news in airport on Hurricane Harvey 😉 almost a news blackout - no wonder Donald gets away with it. Peoples' attentions seems elsewhere eg college football and Harvey.

TBF in true blue Calif so wasn't expecting anything, but few people even talking about Trump at all. And then onlu with sad resignation.

Every little thing will add up, this one has very many people worried and there is talk of a legal pardon, the precedent it sets is as terrifying as a president doing it for the ratings. I can't believe anyone let him say that - assumption being he didn't bother to listen or tell them
