do you think iran will be invaded ?
no but the fat one might
not while Obama is president - he's spent the whole time since coming to office trying to get US troops out of the middle east...
Invaded? No.
Nuked? Depends on the results of the American elections. But probably, yes.
No.
What with mountain bikes??????
There maybe something nasty round the corner. Israel will not let them develop nuclear weapons, Iran will keep trying. Syria may join in to try and rally the people from infighting to a commom enemy.
There are accidents waiting to happen
at the moment it seems that mossad (+ usa?) can waltz around inside iran unopposed anyway
theyve bombed at least one suspected nuclear site,
released viruses into their cybersphere
and are happy to assassinate scientists on their way to work or whilst dropping their kids off at nursery
etc etc

Romney said that if "crippling sanctions" and other strategies fail, military action would be on the table because it is "unacceptable" for Iran to become a nuclear power.Gingrich agreed, saying that if "maximum covert operations" and other strategies failed there would be no other choice. First, though, the United States consider "taking out their scientists," and "breaking up their systems, all of it covertly, all of it deniable," Gingrich said.
"If we re-elect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon. And if you elect Mitt Romney, Iran will not have a nuclear weapon," said Romney.
Ron Paul strongly disagreed with his two rivals, stressing the need to go to Congress before taking military action and saying it isn't worthwhile to use military force against Iran.
"I'm afraid what's going on right now is similar to the war propaganda that went on against Iraq," he said.
not from this forum
The only redeeming feature of that Lifer is that Romney and Gingrich probably don't actually know where Iran is on the map
Bilderberg , has probably declared it is time for another conflict, with the US at the helm ...Obama having control !!! he has the control he is told to have ,like every other puppet
and relax
no way ,why would they ?
Gingrich agreed, saying that if "maximum covert operations" and other strategies failed there would be no other choice. First, though, the United States consider "taking out their scientists," and "breaking up their systems, all of it covertly, all of it deniable," Gingrich said.
What's the point in telling everyone what you're intending to do and stating that it'll be deniable?
What truly bizarre statements. The americans are gonna love him.
i could see a limited campaign/invasion to make sure all nuclear facitities are destroyed and as a many techs captured as possible. With secondary object of engaging the iranian army and complete obliterating it as per the iraqi army in the first gulf war. I don't think they'll try the occupation thing again. Go in wreak havoc and get out.
aran will fight harder and better than iraq.. they will fight dirty and they will only care about beating up israel.. they have nuclear weapons ( dirty bomb potential) and the russkies and chinese dont dislike em..
probably true, but once you've lost your airforce in the first 24 hours your doomed, even the french/italian and the raf managed to bomb an army back to the stone age in 8 weeks.
Iran did not play dirty in the Iran Iraq war. While Iraq bombed Iran with chemical weapons Iran did not. Iran did kill loads of its own people though and used the whole thing to go more and more extreme. Strange seeing pictures of Iran before the revolution. They seem so western. Anyway to me it seems that the main reason the people in Iran live under the regime they do now is down to the USA and UK policy. The status quo kind of of suits the US as they can sell weapons to the other gulf states "for defence" against Iran.
Oh I I am pretty sure that a dirty bomb is not actually a threat/real weapon in reality. They just do not work.dirty bomb

This is not a redeeming feature. They will launch the nukes a long tine before they pass 11+ geography. As long as they don't land within their own borders, they will then claim victory and justify doing it again.
Strange seeing pictures of Iran before the revolution. They seem so western.
Well the Shah had quite a lot of help...
But that's one thing that led to his downfall, the perception that he was a US puppet, along with the oppression that went on under him.
The shah was installed as as a result of UK and US involvement. They got rid of a democratic government as the leader wanted to nationalise the oil.

A good public debate always helps keep things covert and deniable.
Quite enjoyed this when I saw it:

shouldn't we beat some of the weaker teams such as the Taliban before asking the Iranians for a match?
Israel will continue to get all jumpy
The rest of the world will be all indecisive
Israel will launch a pre-emptive strike against Irans nuclear installations
Iran will retaliate and the US will be drawn into the defence of Israel.
In the meantime China will have built another 30 aircraft carriers and increased the size of their army by another 10million.
To OP what for? More mouths to feed? Too much free time on our hands to feed others?
No, even if they invite others to rule them ...
But if they cause trouble just nuke them bits by bits ...
yes, its not IF but When, we have been pushing for total middle east control sorry (regime change) for Years now ... its just around the corner IMO (cheers Israel) :O(

the key phrase in my point was

Israeli troops look up for dropping in on the Iranians either that or their the ones that will nuke them. After all one of Nostradamus Prophecies is that war will come from the East resulting in the end the world, oh joy!
If they only sell their oil in Euros then it'll happen.
we sure as hell wont if they have nukes which is the very reason they want nukes.
Apart from the US no one has used them offensively as there primary function is defensive ...dont **** with me as I have nukes.
It works a treat for North Korea.
Will we ..no idea the wests startling hypocrisy knows no limits so possibly.
The EU has just put in place a ban on purchasing oil from Iran (though existing contracts can run till July).
I think it's highly likely that Iran will be extensively bombed. We aren't being fed this daily anti-Iranian propaganda for nothing.
Whilst of course western governments kept very quiet about oil-rich Saudi Arabia announcing last week that they needed to build their own nuclear industry.

Still, the totalitarian regime in Saudi Arabia which stones to death its citizens are our mates, so that's alright then. Specially as the Saudi regime is so stable that there is no chance it will fall into the hands of "extremists"
Klunk
I stand corrected (well siting in the kitchen actually)
I think that war with Iran would be a line that the secular Israelis wouldn't be prepared to cross. Tensions are already running high between the Ultra-Orthodox, Religious Zionists and Secularists; in fact there was an article in Haaretz saying that is heading to a point where the only solution will be a 4 state one under a federal government - Palestinians, Secular Israelis, Religious Zionists and Ultra Orthodox Jews.

A couple of my mates are hoping they will be invaded as they will make rediculous amounts of money from the aftermath. Not my kind of thing...
There is a popular phrase that goes 'Every American president will have his war'. Well Obama hasnt had one yet......

This forum, and others such as mumsnet, are monitored* for threads such as these.
As soon as the data shows that enough mountain bikers and yummy mummies are accepting of the invasion of another Middle Eastern Country, then Bang, in they go.
You can't even ignore the thread, there is also a counter for "What tyres for...?" threads which, when it reaches a total of 3 times asked after this thread originated , shows enough people to be indifferent to this discusion to be deemed as "invasion acceptable to the general public".

No, I don't need propaganda ... there is no reason to start a war but there is every reason to nuke maggots to kingdom come. We, the parasites, deserve all that nuke can give us.
OP - Invasion by conventional land forces? No. The terrain is suited to gravity type DH/AM type adventures. Definately not and XC course like Iraq in 1991 or 2003. More likely there will be rerun of the 1981 Operation Opera by the Israelis. Of course this will need to be supported by the US, Saudi Arabia and Iraq to ensure refuelling, a clear airspace and recovery should it all go the wrong. This is assuming that the Iranians have not aquired some effective anti-aircraft missiles like the S300 from Viktor Bout's mates. There could be some special forces action on the ground. However, the US have not forgotten the shame of Operation Eagle Claw in 1980 - very embarrassing. The Iranians may use their rather effective naval forces to disrupt shipping through the 54 km wide Strait of Hormuz. The problem with this is that they need to sell their own oil to the far east via the same shipping route. With some luck the Iranians will see sense and negotiate a transparent, but robust inspection regime to verify their peaceful intentions. At least, let's hope so...otherwise Israel may have to settle it with a few well aimed Jericho IIs...
I thought North Korea was a bigger target in the eyes of
the US
The US has about 27 000 military types in South Korea and 35 000 in Japan to deal with any attack from the North Korea. The US and its allies in the region have little to fear from a conventional force. North Korea is happy with the status quo and will do nothing to risk losing it. There is little chance of the South provoking an attack without the backing of the US. I also have my own doubts about the viability of North Korea's nuclear weapons.
themightymowgli - MemberI thought North Korea was a bigger target in the eyes of

The priority for North Korean is to worship dear leader III ... nothing else comes first.
I-ran's (as in I run) leaderships on the other hand are either too stupid or delusional to begin thinking that the reincarnation of Darius III or the creation of new Babylon is in their grasps. I guess without realising they are actually slowly enlisting themselves into the category of endanger species ...
There's no chance conventional troops will go into Iran (unless Iran does something really stupid...). Ofc special forces will already be there and targets already selected for air strikes. I think the US will use any excuse to launch an attack, hence the provocative show of force going on at the moment and trying to back them into a corner with sanctions. I'd give it at most 6 months before something kicks off, the interesting and unknown element is what will Iran's response be.
#now find it acceptable to openly discuss the invasion of Iran
What a strange thing to say. Is freedom of speech now curtailed? Bit like it is in Iran?
It's disgraceful that we are apparently fine with our buddies murdering iranian scientists and blowing up facilities etc. Where is the UN mandate for that? It's terrorism, plain and simple.
And I hope Iran do get nukes then hopefully we can avoid another war.
Then again going to war is a tried and tested method of getting out of a recession...
Is there anyone in the world that America hasn't fought?
Seriously. I know they have to in this instance but its amazing to see over history how many countries has both threatened and fought. Can we list them?
UK (and its colonies by default)
Itself 😆
Germany
Italy
Japan
Vietnam
China/Korea (Korean war)
Egypt (Suez)
Cuba (Bay of Pigs)
Iraq
Afghanistan (it was run by the Talebanies)
Egypt (Suez) ?
i'll think you'll find france & the UK were told in no uncertain terms to cease and desist by the US
And I hope Iran do get nukes then hopefully we can avoid another war.
😯
😆 😆 😆
Ok, I'll counter you with secret American warplane involvement in the 6 day war with Egypt...
I think you'll find the US has world domination on its agenda- even everyday things like telly programmes are aimed at ramming itself down out throats.
They are this centuries version of the Roman empire.
Edit: im quite pleased that they invented the mountain bike though!

not that old chestnut.

Depends if you include covert support for freedom fighters / terrorists.

You're welcome. Er, what was your point, exactly?
Depends if you include covert support for freedom fighters / terrorists.
Not forgetting kidnap and assassination around the globe.
If a Muslim shot dead a number of people in the States we'd all see it as an outrage and cowardly yet America kills 'suspected' terrorists leaders globally without a trial...
Controversial?

I'd certainly not like to live in Iran myself, but if it is human rights that is you concern, Saudi Arabia appears worse.

http://www.amnesty.org/en/region/saudi-arabia/report-2011
I apologise if I've misinterperated your previous coments as in favour of bombing or invading Iran. Would you like to clarify this yourself?
I assume you are not in favour of bombing/invading Saudi Arabia.
For clarity, I believe we should not invade or bomb either, but once public opinion has been manipulated enough, we will attack Iran.
Apparently, final permission has to be given by the Prime Minister of the day before any of our nukes can be released.
Denis Healey is recorded as saying that if he had been Prime Minister, he would have said no, if the strike had been in retaliation. His reasoning was that the damage already having been done, a counter-strike would simply have been from revenge and as such, would not have been useful in the broader humane sense.
Interestingly, he is not recorded with an opinion as to the efficacy of a "pre-emptive" strike.
The bombs dropped on Japan in 1945 are often held as an example of horror, yet they are also described as ending the war with a fraction of the cost of human life that would have resulted in seeing it through to the end by traditional means.
Depends where you want to draw the line, I suppose. Moral absolutes, or pragmatic regrets...
I am not in favour of bombing anyone, however it is not possible to colour the saudis as fundamental nutjobs whilst claiming that the iranians are lovely people. The governments are just as bad as one another and I would imagine that the overwhelming majority in each country would choose a more liberal society given the option.
Wrecker,
Nobody is trying to
.colour the saudis as fundamental nutjobs whilst claiming that the iranians are lovely people
I'v shown that they are both very similar, hence the links to both of their unfavourable human rights records. You can make up your own mind which is worse if you need to, but both aren't good.
I actually commented that I certainly wouldn't choose to live in Iran. However, It won't get any easier for the people that do live there with bombs falling on them.
I'm not saying they are loum, and my comments weren't directed at anyone in particular but there is a subtle flavour or pro-iran/anti-saudi in some of the posts/thread.
The americans are going to do whatever they want and their track record indicates what that'll be. Ernie has it right that the media has started the indoctrine/brainwashing and it's only going one way now unless our politicians show a bit of spine for a change. I shalln't raise my hopes though.
Someone far better informed than I posted an explanation of a possible (and convincing) motive for the invasion of iran (other than the obvious) the basis of which was a new pipeline.
there going to get nuked

Given I'mADinnerJacket's expressed intention of destroying them

http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/january2007/260107offthemap.htm
The Guardian's Jonathan Steele cites four different translations, from professors to the BBC to the New York Times and even pro-Israel news outlets, in none of those translations is the word "map" used. The closest translation to what the Iranian President actually said is, "The regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time," or a narrow relative thereof. In no version is the word "map" used or a context of mass genocide or hostile military action even hinted at.The acceptance of the word "map" seemingly originated with the New York Times, who later had to back away from this false translation. The BBC also wrongly used the word and, in comments to Steele, later accepted their mistake but refused to issue a retraction.
"The fact that he compared his desired option - the elimination of "the regime occupying Jerusalem" - with the fall of the Shah's regime in Iran makes it crystal clear that he is talking about regime change, not the end of Israel. As a schoolboy opponent of the Shah in the 1970's he surely did not favor Iran's removal from the page of time. He just wanted the Shah out," writes Steele.
If it all kicks off how likely are we to be involved and what would we gain? Our forces are spread thin and ill equipped surely we would have to sit this one out.
I wish we could see that blindly following the septics as they blunder around the world is wrong.
As an aside, the yanks charged us for helping out in world war 2 can we send them a bill for this centuries adventures?

There's plenty of other stuff about it available from less nutty sources, that was just one of the first that came up in a google search. It just goes to show how easily some things become 'facts'. I'm no fan of ahmedinajad either way btw but anyone who seriously think he plans to nuke Israel is an idiot.
There is an amazing double standard involved with Israel - a rogue state which regularly carries out major violations of all sorts of UN resolutions and international laws - being allowed nuclear weapons while we threaten war with Iran for doing the same.

Yeah as mentioned, you couldn't be more wrong about Suez. In fact the complete reserve is true, ie, the United States very strongly condemned Britain, France, and Israel, for attacking Egypt. This was for a multitude of reasons including because after WW2 there was enormous pressure on Britain and France to dismantle their empires and reign back their imperialist behaviour. Also "vital" British and French interests did not automatically translate into vital US interests.

Op - I'm more concerned that Iran is in fact setting a trap for the US and its allies. Luring carrier battle groups into the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf might be a perfect way to stack the odds in Iran's favour. Carriers are designed to hide in the wide expanses of deep oceans. Iran has an impressive navy with really scary weapons. According to wikkipedia they have 26 submarines, supersonic anti ship missiles and supercavitating torpedoes that can travel over 300km/h!!! Let's not forget that they are the heirs of the Persian empire who were masters at intrigue and deception.
