chiefgrooveguru » I don't need to pay attention, my bloody brain just remembers everything etc.

I'm like this, too. I'd rather it not the case but alas, I'm cursed.

I also remember quite a few of the faces from the mugshot threads so passport style avatars are applied in my minds eye. After that recent look-a-like they'll be a few hybrids appearing, no doubt.

Edit : Love the Edukational analysis, btw. I'll put money on you having [Arnie] detailed files [/Arnie].

Having worked in various jobs and places and not having bothered to learn the names of some of the idiots, the obnoxious, and the always bloody right etc,i treat this forum like that, best is i can just switch off the forum cant with workmates.

But unlike in real life even the idiots and fools all offer help to people in serious difficulties, thats what makes this forum so special needs.

A bloke with an eco friendly house in France and a guitar playing son who's surprisingly complimentary about everybody (given alternative descriptions he could have picked, at least for me!) Well almost everybody I suppose, vicky.

I do. The Usual suspects pop up to make me laugh , educate me and frustrate in equal measure.
Long may it continue.

I have a little mental category of "irrational right wing nutjobs" whom I try to avoid debating because it's like trying to nail blancmange onto the ceiling, and never leads to anything good.

and PMs, proper easy quoting etc. - in fact all the things you get on almost every other forum on the internet which use standard off the shelf forum software, rather than the STW bespoke stuff, which is apparently much better.

Back to the OPs question, I notice that one guy is usually the first to post on most threads, regardless of subject (you know who you are). Must be a likely candidate for Mastermind if ever there was one!

"And your specialist subject is?"

"Keyboard use from 2001 - present "

"You have 90 seconds on writing bollocks, starting now"

"Question 1. Am I right?"

"No"

I kind of have to to an extent (cos, y'know, Mod). A lot of people have 'handwriting' which is fairly distinctive despite some of the returning banned's efforts to hide it, I'm pretty good at pattern-matching like that. Back in college I could've told you with a reasonable degree of accuracy who'd wrote a chunk of code amongst my friends (and indeed, I can spot my own handiwork; I've a server on the bench at work at the moment that I have no recollection of ever seeing before, but I can tell that I originally built it).

I've an appalling memory though, it always amazes me when someone pulls me up on something I said or did two years ago. Either some people have long memories or they bank stuff away for future ammo.

I only have two criteria for STW posters.
There are ones I would share a pint with and there are some that I wouldn't share the same pub with.
Keeps it simple 😉

I have no idea who anyone is - but then I'm much the same in real life 😀

I do of course have a man who identifies people for me.

Apart from poor users of English 😉

Two people sharing the same pint seems a bit unhygienic.
I'd prefer it if we each had our own pint but we could drink them together in the same pub.
Is that a third group?

Actually until recently I was of the opinion that I'd be happy to share a real life pint with any of the posters, and that probably we had more that made us similar (riding bikes, writing inconsequential crap on an internet forum) than separated us. But now I don't think I would 🙁

Absolutely. There are some folk who you can have a bit of banter with and appreciate a bit of humour (it helps if you've met off-forum too). Others get more of a straight answer.

It also helps if you're aware of folks previous posts as it can help frame any response better. This is especially true if responding to some technical matter.

Cougar » Either some people have long memories or they bank stuff away for future ammo.

On this forum and a few others I've been accused of being petty or a sad ****er or whatever because I have a 'good' memory*. I think the former can easily be confused with the latter in the eyes of those that have a poor memory, especially so if they're prone to childish behaviour or/and thoughts and so judge others by their own ways.

That's not aimed at you. Unless, of course, the cap fits... 😉

*I write 'good' but it can be awful on occasion so not permanently photographic, if at all. It's hard to explain TBH.

Brexit thread, me too. Though you might be surprised to hear I'd happily meet Jamba as he remains civil despite differences.

In posts since my last post I've spotted:

A singing gnome who lives in a cherry wood.
An oil man who worries about his daughter and lives in austere Scandinavian style accommodation that definitely isn't Ikea.
A lady who teaches kids to ride bikes in grim Manchester streets.
A computer geek who should spend more time doing DIY or on his bike (if he has one) and less on this forum.
A **** * - that's not an insult but I don't want to upset him.
An ageing cockney drummer

Strangely absent from this thread are:

The Salford ** ******. (insults censored this time 😉 )
The oldest unhealthiest spice girl in the south west. (she'll report this thread now 😉 )
A stealth T5 driving chippie with a love of the outdoors and a disregard for German law.
A punk who is now an unreasonably reasonable family man
A city trader (or something like that) who hates TJ
A music lover from Bristol

Some forum users here I've "known" online for over a decade. As alluded to with Nick, they've gone through many changes in their lives. It's like watching a soap as people have ups and downs. Some people do well, others get by and I'd love to see them do better, others are slow-motion car crash stuff. We've even lost a few good people for good.

Most threads seem to consist of posts from a small(ish) group of people so you begin to recognise different people quite quickly in my opinion. I've not met anybody (that I'm aware of) from here, but the majority seem reasonable judging by internet personas alone. Even the angriest and most argumentative / antagonistic seem to have empathy when somebody posts up a serious thread.

Ditto. I'm bad enough with real names. Forum names are just a blur to me. I can be talking about something and refer to a guy I know and suddenly I realise he's actually that guy. Chances are I've not even noticed or I've offended people I know as friends 😀

Who says what though, I try not to get wound up by stuff because either they're talking bollocks or I don't agree with their viewpoint or they don't agree with my bollocks talking 😀 . It's just a forum.

In that way the forum is good in that it's easy to gloss over the names.

I have met them both in real life at the same time. Neither was anything like I thought they would be.

But then who would think I was a meek empathic person?

As others have alluded to the way when someone needs help or support that the forum rallies round and even those you disagree with on almost anything become helpful and supportive is quite astonishing.
