It dawned on me that I virtually never pay attention to usernames on this forum. Just the messages. Is anyone else the same? I could rarely refer to other threads and comments from someone.

Depends whether they're being a ***** and boasting about parking their van in the P&C spaces at a supermarket 😉

Sometimes I read a post and can tell it is from one of a couple of people before I look at the name.

There are a few whose contributions I avoid, on the rationale that life's too short to waste time on buffoons.

Possibly as some people are extremely prolific and I wonder what jobs they do inbetween posting.

And despite the fact that there seems to be a drive in threads a lot of time to convince someone of something at all costs, there are some good counter debates too. They often come from the same names.

I don't open or post on any thread started by weegies, but other than that I don't pay much attention.

I don't need to pay attention, my bloody brain just remembers everything. I think it's the same part that also recognises actors I saw in one small role years ago or people who served me in a shop more than once.

On the plus side, it does give context to everything I read because there are some whose opinions I trust and others who, well...

No. It's just the Internet. Bollocks and bullshit posted in equal measure with the odd great nugget at times.

It's amusing though.

Tend to notice people I actually know and you do get to recognise people's posting styles.
Everyone brings something different and everyone has a valid opinion.

Not met anyone from the forum I didn't like and hope that would be the case with those I've not yet met.
I used to find Simon Barnes annoying (any news?) and then he wasn't here anymore.
I miss him, and the others who can't or don't post anymore.

Only one or two of the prolific posters, a couple of the regulars and I guess the rest are too boring to register. 😛

I click on posts that I find interesting. most of these are from posters I know.
posts about politics or tech (non cycle) stuff, I just ignore.
I like posts about touring, and beer, and food, and new bikes.
I used to like adding posts for a bit of self pleasure (trolling). I no longer bother. I have grown up now.

Some folk stick in your mind, usually for repeatedly having digs at me, talking crap or being super right wing.

Plenty I don't notice as such.

I check periodically, particularly if it's an unusually annoying/funny/weird post.

Yes, it doesn't apply to everyone but some people have a history of posts going back years that adds background to whatever they write. Some have shown themselves to be intolerant and if I notice a post by them I ignore it, likewise once the professioanally argumentative get involved then I'll normally step away and that's often before it really kicks off because you know from their posting history that things are only going to go one way once they're on board. At the other extreme some people have revealed personal circumstances which might add context to the issue that they're currently posting about so if I notice them it's possible that I would respond more delicately. Then there are the very few people that seem to take everything in their stride, happy to dish it out and happy to be the butt of the joke but who never seem to make things personal, they're easy to notice and appreciated too.

Yes. Everyone is an individual. I don't have time to read every single thread on here, so I choose what to read based on the title or on the user name.

Same as you. That's why avatars are useful on forums. You can create a visual association between a name and a "face". Otherwise it's just walls of text. There are a few users, maybe three, who's opinions and personality I can just abut remember but I still mix them up with similar sounding names.

I'm on bigger forums with maybe double the traffic and it's much easier to remember users because they have avatars. It seems to lead to less bickering and bullshit because people aren't just roaring in an anonymous echo chamber.

In no particular order the above are

A marauding Scot.
A sex-starved unicyclist.
Someone responsible for the defense of Edinburgh; health, workers rights, freedom of movement and the right to do so without a helmet.
A BM troll with exceptionally bad taste (apart from ski resorts).
-
A euro-hating financial wizard from OZ
-
A man from planet Borneo with the corresponding social skills.
LOOK AT MEEEEEE!!!!!
Someone from where I was born.
Far too reasonable to be real.
A fed (I won't say anyone more as I don't like being beaten up)
Mr random interests.
Chief gear freak, cars or bikes.
New here, probably been banned and come back on a new IP (only joking)
-
-
One of those northern down-to-earth types.
Many a (true) word said in jest.
An MTB and touring heavyweight (when healthy) rarely on the wrong side.
The most appropriate user name on the forum.
The race whippet on BM who worked in a bike shop then got a job and a VW and is out buying slippers right now.
A rambler
The pseudo is female but in my head she's a big hairy bloke
Petrol head, iron fists

Sorry if you have a "-", either I'm not sure who you are or you haven't offended me.

Maybe more later

And Edukator: a cheeky mare! There's a small fuzzy photo on my profile but clear enough that I'm not big, hairy or a bloke 😛

The only person I take no notice of is someone who appears to go out of their way to be antagonistic, rude and obnoxious on almost every thread they respond to. Obviously when he was having mental health issues with his daughter and came on here looking for the sympathy vote his attitude was slightly different.

Sorry, I missed the northern business man who will be whipping his workers daily post Brexit getting his revenge for them voting leave thus benefiting from the reduction in workers rights and the absence of human rights protection.

Identity theft, Vicky.

No idea of whom our politically-correct, tree hugging vegetarian is on about.
