So, my question is - are we really hated that much down south?

Apart from the 'deep frying everything' style windups, I don't think I've ever seen anything negative in the media or met any southerners who have any anti-Scotish sentiment. I could just be not looking at the right media or meeting the right people though.

I see little negativity towards the Scots in the South - other than created by Scots who've come down here who seem to enjoy slagging off the English.

Well, except we don't, as my OP made clear. Contrary to public belief, neither do we wander about all day looking for English people to hate. There's a small element of stupid bigotry, and a larger element of what is intended as good-natured mickey taking, but in really most of the bigots in Scotland are too concerned with their rivals in the Old Firm to care about anything else.

Exactly what I was going to say. My problem is those Scots that work down here and whinge about England, the English and how great Scotland is. And I've known a few of them!

There was a program on the telly earlier in the year, about how Northerners and Southerners defined themselves, the programme came to the general conclusion that Northerners defined themselves quite a bit as not being Southerners, and the Southerners weren't really that bothered about defining themselves as anything.

Not in my experience - I've never heard any discussion about 'Scotland' on any level, either positive or negative.

The majority of 'south eastern people' are really quite content with their lot and more likely to be concerned with getting 'their' parking space and the cost of child minders then anything northern, let alone Scottish.

The regions who imagine they're 'hated' , as jon hints at, are usually the ones who do the 'hating' in some kind of perverted amalgamation of self-loathing and persecution-complex 🙄

I've met a lot of Scots in the south of England who appear to be prepared to do anything for their country short of actually living there.

Mostly I just think people are people and don't hate them based on where they come from - well, except the French, obviously 😉

Although, when people refer to Gordon Brown in the above terms on another thread on the forum, or referring to Michael Martin as "Gorbals Mick", it does suggest an element of racism, in as much as their place of origin is irrelevant to the critique of them, especially in the case of Gordon Brown. If you don't beleive me, replace Scotish ([i]sic[/i]) with **** and see what I mean.

Anyway, I'm not trying to create an issue, I was genuinely interested to know. Like I said, I'd be delighted if the two countries decided to move from devolution to independence, as I'm not convinced that the current financial settlement works in Scotland's favour.

I love the Scots especially the self importance they place on themselves!

Seriously the only objection I ever hear about the Scots is that you don't support the English football team at the World Cup, whilst we like to support out less abled little sister when she competes.

im not sure the scots are important enough to be actually hated, there is a list, and you are on it, but not even close to top ten.

i'm ambivalent towards northerners and scots, it's almost as if they are shouting "hey look at us up here aren't we wonderful"
not giving a toss about them is probably what they hate about southerners the most.

I'm from the north of England and even there I can count on one finger the number of times I've heard anyone even mention Scotland other than as a nice place for a holiday. It's not a case of hating, or even disliking, the English really don't hold any grudges/dislike or anything of that sort that I can see. That's the sole reserve of the Scots, and they (collectively, not individually) seem to assume we're all still "against" them (from what I can tell, living in Scotland now). They regularly, if in humour mostly, refer to hating the English and the English hating them, the truth is its very one-way.

Any perceived anti-Scot behaviour is most likely to be solely down to the fact that most people forget they exist, much the same way that most from Liverpool forget that Manchester exists until someone brings up some childish sporting rivalry or the fact that someone got a supercasino and someone else didn't etc etc.

As awhiles says, for the most part the English (possibly more the northern english) are baffled by why you hate us. When I asked about this I got political waffle and anchient history lessons, neither of which are changeable on a single-person scale and none of which are representitive of current English thinking IMO.

I am fairly indifferent to "The Scots" as a group, although I like going to Scotland and have met good people I've liked and bad people I haven't who happened to be from Scotland (same as everywhere really).

The only 'hatred' I have experienced was Glaswegian work colleagues spouting hatred about the English (when they'd forgotten that they were working in England with English people) and also about people from Edinburgh -because they were "almost English"....

There are parallels with English people harping on about beating the Germans at football when the Germans are more interested in beating the Dutch.

To be fair you seem to be forgetting the last few hundred years where an Englishman was in charge of Scotland? What isn't fair is the fact that scots can vote on english-only stuff, but english cant vote on scotland only stuff.
