Trying to decide wehether to buy another iPad or a chromebook. I prefer google apps but my iPad 3 is still going even though it's terribly slow now. It does seem a waste to buy an iPad and fill it with google apps especially as you can't remove the pre installed Apple apps.
Do the apps on a chromebook constantly require updating? What about the OS? Are chromebook OS and android merging? Do any of them come with SIM card slots?
Any other pros and cons?
Mine seems to get fairly regular updates. Apps just update in the background, when the OS updates you need to restart for changes to happen (takes a few seconds)
Mine is an Acer 14" with full HD screen and it's been excellent. It hasn't got an SD slot but I just use a card reader when required.

In simple terms updates are quite a good thing, I've not met a programmer who got things right first time yet. All software will update to fix bugs, patch exploits and keep up with hardware changes.
The modern world allows us to update much more easily and that means we people can get quick fixes out when they are needed.
I'm Not against apps updating but I'll not update an iOS again as it slows them down.
Chromebooks do get system updates.
You may not even notice it as it's automatic when you start up.
However, Chromebooks are only supported for 5 years. Then the updates may stop.
(I know this because I bought a refurbished Chromebook on ebay and it was 6 months over the 5-year support date. Sent it straight back....)

Chromebooks get 5yrs, chromeboxes 6.
Updates generally sort themselves out in the background (save for a restart - and you never get a forced restart), unless you are tethering to a mobile network in which case it wont download an update unless you tell it to as it doesnt want to waste your data.

That's not the best idea, also bug fixes and security patches come with updates.
especially as you can’t remove the pre installed Apple apps.
Yes, you can, with the latest version of iOS.

No, it doesn’t.
Although, if you’re thinking of updating an iPad 3 with iOS 12, you’re right out of luck; that machine couldn’t possibly cope with the demands of the OS.
I have an iPhone 6+, which is now five years old, and is running iOS 12, and as far as I’m aware, will run iOS 13 when it’s released later this year. It runs as well as it did when new, if not better.
iOS 12 was specifically configured to work on older devices without compromising performance.

You can remove GarageBand, maps, stocks, safari? Actually I don't safari.
iOS 12 was specifically configured to work on older devices without compromising performance.
Is that the one where they stopped crippling performance on older batteries?
Why are you going from a tablet to a laptop? Have you considered Android tablets?
I didn't know CB had an update lifespan, but just found mine 'runs out' in June
What's the implication? Other than no updates, will it still function or will certain aspects not interface well with the mothership in future.
I'd still have no qualms in getting another even if it does have a 5 year lifespan, for the £100 I paid for this and the 4 years use I've had (and still going strong) the 50p a week or thereabouts has been well worth it!
However, Chromebooks are only supported for 5 years
6.5 years supposedly (but that's the platform, not a specific model variant)
Saying that, just spotted that my C720 hits that date in June, which is more than 5 years since I bought it. It's certainly outlasted my last MacBook (as did the eeePC - remember them?)
I expect that what happens is that the Chrome bit stops updating eventually, but that the apps you've installed will continue to update until those app owners stop creating new versions.
As for having to regularly update, 99% of it is totally transparent in the background. Every so often you get a notification saying you need to restart (which you can do whenever you feel like). Apps are even more transparent.
