As above, the card reader I've just to read sd cards is super slow. I have an external USB drive which doesn't suffer from slow transfer speeds

There are different speeds of SD Cards.

as above and some card readers are faster than others. usb1 or usb2 for instance.

Loads of factors at play here.
Is it USB 1.1 or USB 2.0? Cards also vary vastly in speed, and yes, the performance of the reader could vary.
