A mate just bought a new Dell laptop and can't connect to the internet via his dialup (he's happy with dialup). he previously used an old school workstation, and had a 5pin[?] cable going to a phone/data splitter then the bt line. but his new laptop has a socket with 8pins.

what should i be doing to help him get online?

thanks.

What model of Dell is mate?

8 pin is network by the way - don't force the modem cable in there or bad things can happen (but rarely seem to).

You should tell him to stop being a numpty and get a cheap broadband connection which he can then plug straight in and will almost certainly cost less unless he very rarely uses it.

doesn't have a modem (i'm not sure many laptops do these days)

what clubber said, may even get it free from their mobile phone provider

My new Dell came with a small USB modem in the box

Are you sure it's not there?
it's about 3"x1"x1" with a short USB lead on one end & a standard RJ11 telephone socket on the other

as above - it doesn't have a modem. you need to get an external USB modem or get a broadband deal, the modem for which will plug into the network socket you have found on the laptop. Surely broadband is probably cheaper than dial-up access these days?
