the wife seems quite keen on one for Christmas. I haven't ever used one, so haven't got the slightest idea on how to decide which may suit her the best. Any pointers would be great. Ta

I bought a x trainer to keep fit when my knee stopped me running. My advice would be to buy an expensive one as you'll want to use it, rather than losing interest quickly. I've got a Kettler with a 21 inch flywheel which gives you a decent stride length. They cost about £1k but you might find deals or second hand.

What she really needs is a Concept 2 rowing machine 😉

I bought a NordicTrack one at the beginning of the year to help recover from a running injury.

As with anything like this, they're bloody boring to use. You can get a decent workout on one though.

Sold it a couple of months ago for about a third of what it cost. Would have been better to pay for a gym membership for the same period. So the best bet is find one like mine on eBay.

My wife's had (and broken) three cheapish ones (up to about £350) but she loves using them for a low impact workout in front of a tv. She has now been given one worth a few grand and its night and day better. The problem with the cheaper ones was that the main frame was always bolted to a separate upright frame that had the hand grips on. After time, because of moving around whilst using it, this joint becomes loose and squeaky and it drives you mad. The new expensive one has a much heavier duty frame which is all one price of welded metal meaning no movement or squeaks. I'd spend as much as you can on a decent second hand one as there's probably loads out there being used as posh clothes hangers.

They are huge though, you need loads of space for one. I ended up selling mine to my local Crossfit box.

I really don't find mine boring as it has a lot of programmes and I set the resistance pretty high to make it bloody hard work. So its actually a challenge to get to the end of the set period still at a good pace. Plus I set a load of inspirational Youtube vids on the telly to watch (using a chrome cast) and its a great way to get a mid week winter work out. This is mine:
