How do I crack a password in excel? There are loads of programmes on the WWW that come up when I google this however I'm afraid of downloading an .exe file that might be virus/spy/etc.

Type away on the keyboard really fast whilst looking at several monitors, works every time in the movies.

easiest way to crack the password, is to find the owner and ask them.

Like Stoner says, there's some VBA code that you stick in a button that tries every possible combination to get the password. (The password you type is converted to a much shorter string of text, so it doesn't take long.)

it used to work, although several emailings may have changed the layout a bit.

Sub PasswordBreaker()

Dim i As Integer, j As Integer, k As Integer
Dim l As Integer, m As Integer, n As Integer
Dim i1 As Integer, i2 As Integer, i3 As Integer
Dim i4 As Integer, i5 As Integer, i6 As Integer
On Error Resume Next
For i = 65 To 66: For j = 65 To 66: For k = 65 To 66
For l = 65 To 66: For m = 65 To 66: For i1 = 65 To 66
For i2 = 65 To 66: For i3 = 65 To 66: For i4 = 65 To 66
For i5 = 65 To 66: For i6 = 65 To 66: For n = 32 To 126

ActiveSheet.Unprotect Chr(i) & Chr(j) & Chr(k) & _
Chr(l) & Chr(m) & Chr(i1) & Chr(i2) & Chr(i3) & _
Chr(i4) & Chr(i5) & Chr(i6) & Chr(n)
If ActiveSheet.ProtectContents = False Then
MsgBox "One usable password is " & Chr(i) & Chr(j) & _
Chr(k) & Chr(l) & Chr(m) & Chr(i1) & Chr(i2) & _
Chr(i3) & Chr(i4) & Chr(i5) & Chr(i6) & Chr(n)
ActiveWorkbook.Sheets(1).Select
Range("a1").FormulaR1C1 = Chr(i) & Chr(j) & _
Chr(k) & Chr(l) & Chr(m) & Chr(i1) & Chr(i2) & _
Chr(i3) & Chr(i4) & Chr(i5) & Chr(i6) & Chr(n)
Exit Sub
End If
Next: Next: Next: Next: Next: Next
Next: Next: Next: Next: Next: Next

End Sub

-------------------------------------------

Then run it when the protected worksheet is selected
(Tools-Macro-Macros). This should unprotect any
protected worksheet.

seems odd that it doesn't punt you back to the main forum page any more when you've posted, anyway.

that didnt work. The file is locked so that VBA cannot be used (not that I'd know how to use it)

Download OpenOffice from here install and load the spreadsheet - this has allowed me to edit a password protected spreadsheet in the past.

i wonder if those "_" are supposed to be there, maybe emailing that's added them, would probably make more sense.
