I had a big council tax bill today, addressed to me but also to the owner of a different house I lodged in for 3 weeks - this was 3 years ago, when I moved to the area and was looking for my own place. It stated that it was his address that the bill related to? Why/how would I get a bill like that out of the blue, with his name on it, when he's never been associated with this address and I was only a short term lodger at that address?? Is it some new tory party fund raising initiative? I'll call them tomorrow, just wondering of anyone else has experienced such council tax weirdness?

They're on to you. drive to the coast, leave your car and a neat pile of clothes by the shore, walk cross country to the nearest train station (this may take several days) then burn the microfilm. Rendezvous with your contact at your third last meeting point, head to the advised safe house and await further instruction.

Sounds like he's named you as being resident and therefore joint and severely liable for the council tax. If the bill has not been paid they will continue hunting for you until it is. Hopefully (for you) you can prove that either your tenancy agreement didn't require you to pay council tax (i.e. it was included in the rent) or at least you have good records of when you moved in and out so don't end up paying more than you should.

I rented a room, him and his missus lived there, and I moved out after 3 weeks when I found my own place. This was more than 3 years ago now that I think about it. I shall just drive to the coast then. Damn.

well, not 100% sure that english council tax liability is exactly the same as scotland, but up here a resident landlord and partner are liable for council tax only. lodgers aren't liable to pay.

go stick it to the man tomorrow!

don't forget to burn the car and leave a short but incoherent note, feel free to copy any of my posts at random, that'll do the trick.

Ours has gone up from £760 something last year to over £1000 this year. Which is taking the michael. Probably because of all the ****less layabout dole scroungers who get benefits and don't pay anything.

Stupid money isn't it Phil. We'd be better off if we both got sacked and claimed of job seekers and benifits 🙁 Don't pay rent, council tax, childcare gets paid for. I can go out waste money on drugs and booze and all sorts!

I hope you appreciate how painful that was to type into my browser.

Yep, you're down as joint and severally liable.

The owner probably hasn't paid his c/tax and they are now chasing anyone else they can find.

At worst I'd say you might have to stump up 3 weeks worth of c/tax but certainly argue the toss. They are probably just trying it on, but nip it in the bud quickly before they pass stuff across to 'debt collectors'.

Was it a formal agreement in the first place? Do they have anything in writing to prove you were ever there?

Why not just say you haven't heard of them and you were on holiday in Bangor at the time.
