So Mars, you know the company that sells the sugarry, fatty treats has tried to distance its self from the deep fried mars bar becuase "they are too unhealthy". 😯
They said:
...deep-frying one of our products would go against our commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles.
How can they get away with spouting this guff?
Just read that in the paper actually.
It's this change to 'treats' that they are trying on. Making people think they are not selling more product to people as well by calling them 'share bags'. No one shares them.
It's all perception management by marketing departments.
Plus, if you use tempura batter, they are ace!
Surely step one when trying to distance yourself from something is to not send a press release linking yourself to that thing!
Honestly if I was Mars, I'd be putting out a press release that said- "Deep fried mars bars- they'll kill you real fast, but by god are they tasty."
Eating the occasional sugary fatty treat isn't unhealthy, and I don't think Mars have been encouraging us to eat their products in unhealthy quantities.
(Having said that, eating the occasional deep-fried sugary fatty treat isn't unhealthy unless you're eating a significant volume.)
However, I also don't remember Mars promoting a 'lifestyle', healthy & active or not.
Beer batter for a deep-fried Mars bar, surely.
And once you've opened the bottle, it would be wrong to pour the rest own the sink.
Its the same as when they replaced king sized mars bars with the twin pack. Nobody shares them they just eat both (then feel guilty for being greedy b******s). I dont blame mars though. Nobody in business plans to sell less year on year.
However, I also don't remember Mars promoting a 'lifestyle', healthy & active or not.
Well I've been eating a Mars Bar everyday since they helpfully informed me that "a Mars a day helps you work rest and play"
The chip shop I went to in Scotland wouldn't deep fry me a Mars bar.
wot ernie said.
if that wasnt (falsely) promoting a lifestyle i dont know what is.
the goodness of sugar
Milky Way: The sweet you can eat between meals and not ruin your appetite.
However, I also don't remember Mars promoting a 'lifestyle', healthy & active or not.
i think the sugar might have rotted your brain. 😉
They are nice though.
Our local chippy does battered fredo's.
How can they get away with spouting this guff?
it begs the question, where have you been living for last 20 yrs ?
I don't think Mars have been encouraging us to eat their products in unhealthy quantities.
you are right all their marketting is designed to get you NOT to eat their product- it is most certainly not designed to increase sales and if it was it would not work [ like fag adverts obviously ].
do they still use 'a mars a day helps you work, rest and play'?
I could write that with a clear conscience, its a chocolate bar FFS.
I'd struggle to write any of the following
"This new £5000 super mountain bike with change you from a fat biffer into a riding god"
"This beer will make you sexually attractive"
"This gun only kills bad guys"
"This endowment policy will pay out more than your mortgage"
Etc...
Junkyard - Memberyou are right all their marketting is designed to get you NOT to eat their product- it is most certainly not designed to increase sales and if it was it would not work [ like fag adverts obviously ].
Counterargument- if you're eating sweets in moderation, Mars want it to be their sweets. Ads don't have to increase the amount you eat to be worthwhile.
Since when was working, resting and playing a 'lifestyle'?
- We work mainly because we have to (& it gives us the money to indulge in the next bit:)
- We play because it's enjoyable/challenging/whatever.
- We rest to recover from the work & play. Oh, and beause the human body needs it so we have no choice.
They're just three things that everybody does by default.
It's called 'normal life' isn't it?
Since when was working, resting and playing a 'lifestyle'?
It's part of my lifestyle, specially the resting and playing bit.
But you're right - all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
They're just three things that everybody does by default.
Everybody?
they helpfully informed me that "a Mars a day helps you work rest and play"
Come on, they haven't used that for bloody ages.
Come on, they haven't used that for bloody ages.
Now someone tells me 😐
BTW that was in response to this :
However, I also don't remember Mars promoting a 'lifestyle', healthy & active or not.
Making people think they are not selling more product to people as well by calling them 'share bags'. No one shares them.
Yes. I've taken a liken to the big 'sharing' bags of crisps. The guilt starts creeping in when you're dipping your hand in and you realise there's only a few left. So you have to leave 1/10 of the bag for the next day - it makes you feel that little bit better knowing you haven't eaten them ALL.
They're just three things that everybody does by default.
Everybody?
Yes.
Find me somebody who's never done any work, or never 'played' (i.e. done something recreational) or rested.
joao3v16 - Do you work in the PR department for pedants anonymous?
regardless of what it helps you do, a mars a day is a lifestyle imo.
Find me somebody who's never done any work,
i'm just about to go give medication to one just now.
apologies x
Counterargument- if you're eating sweets in moderation, Mars want it to be their sweets. Ads don't have to increase the amount you eat to be worthwhile.
They beleive that argument about as much as they belive theor PR guff
Its an odd argument to make , smoking PR/marketting ones use it in particular. It is a sort of dont worry it does not really work but we will continue to spend millions on it and try and stop you banning it.
They want to increase market share i dont think they care whether they do it by tkaing a competitors share or whethe rthey achieve it by making their customers fat biffers tbh.
Granted that is not that easy a piece pf PR to sell 😉 so they are left to lie , decieve and spin to us because none of us can handle the truth least of all the customers.
Amybody here ever been unable to get to sleep and thought "I know, I'll eat a Mars Bar, they help you rest" 🙄
Yes, something full of sugar to help you rest, that's what you need.
Maybe washed down with a can of Red Bull.
You'll sleep like a baby.
regardless of what it helps you do, a mars a day is a lifestyle imo
I poo every day. Is that a lifestyle too? 🙂 😉
choosing not to poo would be a lifestyle tho, wouldnt it.
I'd struggle to write any of the following

"This beer will make you sexually attractive"

yet you just did. not in marketing are you?.
Ah, I think I'm getting it now!
So, eating is a lifestyle because we all choose to eat.
Unless there's another reason for doing it.
Anybody here living the 'not eating' lifestyle?
Please let me know how you get on.
Surely the point isn't whether what mars promote is actually a lifestyle or not but the fact they are using the word "healthy".
The best healthly thing Mars could do would be to stop selling their products.
The rest is just trying to hide from the fact that their products are bad for you and con the public. It would be better if they just came out and said. "Yep - they are really bad, but you got to admit they do taste delicious!Go on, you know you want to"
Ah, I think I'm getting it now!So, eating is a lifestyle because we all choose to eat.
Close, very close, you're almost there.......go on....... you know you can do it.
Yes that's right.......what you choose to eat is ........ a lifestyle choice !!!
Junkyard - MemberThey beleive that argument about as much as they belive theor PR guff
Of course not, nobody does. But still, it's how you can justify "our ads aren't designed to make people eat more sweets" without resorting to "ads don't work".
Find me somebody who's never done any work...
Have you been to Stroud?
that looks like a battered number 2 tbh
YUK!!
I have a strange craving for one of these deep fried treats but I don't really like Mars bars. Do you think they'd do a deep fried Double Decker or Boost?
I've never had a battered Mars but I did once have a battered snickers from the wonderful Millenium take away in Sheffield (50p burgers mmmmmmm!)
The juxtaposition of the crispy batter, gooey mars stuff and the crunch peanuts was truely a delight.
I was in no way sober!
See thats fine. Trying to associate your product with a trait, such as beliving in England is fairly harmless, people might be PRed into buying your product but so what, nobody forced them.
But claiming you promote a healthy lifestyle when all you sell is sugary snacks is just full on BS.
An analogy would be McDonalds sponsoring the olympics which just them trying to associate them selves with a popular event, vs them running an add campain saying that top athletes eat big macs to help them train.

deep fried Double Decker or Boost
I like this idea

Not when you use the same marketing in Scotland it's not 😀
I had a deep fried Mars Bar in Scotland last year.
They fried it in the same fat they used for the fish.
Rank does not begin to describe it.
They fried it in [s]the same fat they used for the [/s]pish.
Does that?

Mike Hall ate at McDonalds regularly during his record round-the-world cycle.
It's because MacD's will not poison you, at least not in the short-term. And he needed the cals.
www.marshealthyliving.com
There's glucose for energy, caramel for strength. The chocolate's only there to keeeep it, the right leeeeeeeength !
😀
I also had to laugh when I read it this morning.
The chip shop I went to in Scotland wouldn't deep fry me a Mars bar.
My local, Scott's View in St Boswells - even do that classic dish; deep-fried pizza 🙂
ive tried a deep fried mars bar, tbh i sort of enjoyed it, but i havent had the desire for another one.
spoke to a mate one day who told me he tried a deep fried cream egg.
dont fancy that like.
