Hey Peeps, Just a little brain picking if you don;t mind.

Just built up a new comp (Asus motherboard, AMD X3 cpu) and after the install I can't get a Lan connection. I've built about 20 comps up in my time so not a complete noob but this is baffling me. In the past once the operating system has been installed and Lan drivers are in place i've just been able to connect to any available LAN network (Work or Home) and i've been straight online, this however isn't playing ball. The Lan connection is showing as active, and working properley but plugged in to the network it just comes back as Unidentified Network. I've tried refreshing the connection and router but to no avail.

I did a clean install of Vista, then a clean install of XP (incase it was a driver issue with Vista) and the problem is the same when trying to connect to my home or work network.

So to highlight:-

- Same Problem in Vista and XP
- Same problem at home or in work
- Drivers have def been installed (And I checked to make sure they're uptodate)
- Have tried diferrent Cables adn thats not the issue
- Have tried a PCI network card and have the same promlem with that

Now I thought I had had a faulty Motherboard but I have taken it back and changed it and I have the same problem with the new one.
It could be a faulty batch and i'm just be unlucky or I might be being a complete knob.... I've never had this issue in the past though and have always just hooked in to these networks on a fresh install and got a connection fine.

Any idea's?

umm. first thing i was going to say was duff adaptor, but i see you've changed that. i'd try connecting another computer to your network, and see if that goes ( by another one, i mean one that has not been connected to your network before ). it maybe that there's some problem with the network allocating new IP addresses.
if that's not possible then i'd go into the console and start sending command line stuff. start by just trying to ping the router.

what del said - start off with an MS-Dos prompt and pinging the router and work up from there.

Cheers lads. I've just pinged 192.168.1.1 which is the default gateway for my internet connection on this comp. I think i'm rioght in saying this is the ip for the router....

anyways pinging from the devils comp and it send 4 packets and then promtly losses the lot! 4 out nothing in...

have you got your router set to allow only certain MAC addresses ?

turn off all firewalls & security briefly & see if it connects then ?

Sounds like you router may not be responding to pings from this device, is your router configured to allocate IP's to certain MAC addresses?
Have you tried a wired connection

(havent read the OP fully!)

I think MAC address only matters for wireless (not sure though)

Just root around in the settings of your router they all have different menus etc.
Another option would be to do a factory restet however you would lose all connectivity until you put your password in etc.

Also make sure your card is not trying to use a static and your router is using DHCP etc, I'm sure youve done this already

As previously said, i've never had an issue with this in the past and must have built 15+ new computers here at work and connected to the same network with no problems.
Does the networking of traffic happen on the motherboard at any point? Ie from the lan connection to the rest of the system? just wondering if it is a fault with the board or if that's impossible if I've had the same problem with a PCI lan connection

OK This is weird. I've just looked in the LAN settings and on the client list is the Devils computor?!?!? I've just checked the comp, no connection, come back to here and refreshed the list and its now gone?
What the hell? It did have an IP address assigned before....

What's the IP and subnet mask of the router and what's the IP and mask of the dodgy PC? Are there connection lights on the LAN port on the PC? What LAN speed is the driver configured for on the PC (100, 1000 or auto), if not auto then try auto. What LAN port speeds does the router support? Can the PC ping itself (to check the stack is loaded OK)?

OK sorted cheers everyone.

God know's why t wasn't playing ball. I set the default gateway on the Devil PC to the router and then rebooted comp and router and this seems to have done the trick.

Thanks again
