We will be in touch
my 16yr old lad left school last year and is at college doing a travel and tourism course. hes not enjoying it. hes wondering whether to go back to 6th form to do the same thing, but his uncle (my brother) has offered to let him do an online supported TEFL/TESOL course that his language school offer. this is in the form of modules sent out by email, and answer sheets sent back to be marked. he really fancies this and the idea of teaching abroad eventually.
is he allowed to do this as his 'compulsory further education' or does he have to physically visit a place of education to continue his learning?
thanks
You would really need to ask a professional about it but I can imagine that if they let people use apprenticeships as further education until 18 then yours may count as well.
Just bear in mind how much work will he do if he's not going to a dedicated place of education? Is he disciplined enough to see the course through or will it be something else he doesn't enjoy and drops it?
I thought it had only just come in for pupils now in year 11 :/
My daughter is in this boat (started year 11 in September). The letter stated full time college course, an apprenticeship or a combination of part time course and volunteer work.
I'll see if I can find it but I have a feeling the wife has filed it under B.
serious question, i don't know, what happens if you don't do the official training work education thing? is it just a matter that they won't give benefits in which case if your happy to support him then no issue, or will they fine you?

tis a good question. he seems keen enough but its true hes a bit of a 'facebooker' going on in the background of whatever hes usually doing. he insists he wont and will put his heart into it 🙂

really dont know, good point. lad thinks its a fine but he not sure.
thanks 🙂
This is governed by the Apprenticeship Skills Children and Learning Act 2009 (in England) this indicates that all 16 - 18 years should be in education, an apprenticeship or employment with training, as well as raising the participation age to 17 (and then 18). Your best bet would be to talk to your local education authority
There is no penalty to either parent or kid if they dont attend any kind of education after the age of 16. If you think its the right thing and he wants to do it i'd let him do it
There is no obligation for any child to attend a conventional place of education. In fact there is no obligation to follow any government prescribed curriculum.
Your lad is perfectly entitled to be educated at home, whether that means following an equivalent of the National Curriculum, or some alternative that you devise between you, as long as it helps to adequately prepare your son for life in the world.
You, of course, bear ultimate responsibility, both to your son and legally, for him adhering to the plan, and you may be audited.
This is a very simplistic answer. 🙂
