I was thinking about doing the same for my inherited stamp collection - my research led me to believe that the vast majority of stamp collections are worth almost nothing. I suspect it might be the same for coins (I have some of those as well).
My 30 seconds of research suggests any old junk has a surprising value.

You're better off being a numismatist than a stamp collector, that's for sure. Philately will get you nowhere.
I inherited a collection of stamp and coins. In the end I gave most of it to Oxfam. They have a specialist department and are able to get the full value out of the collection.
The unused British stamps I've keep as they still have their face value. Ideal for Christmas cards etc.
At the very least this is a good game of "Fascist dictator bingo" I've got going here.

You ar right about uncirculated to have some value. Though only some uncirculated have value and it really means uncirculated not touched.
Most likely will not have much value though can be loads of fun looking at history and the craftsmanship that has gone into the design of the older stuff.
In general only the gold and silver is worth its value i gold and silver. random non rare stuff coins go for a tenner or twenty a kg and notes for 50p or a quid if its somewhat decent. For notes only higher denominations of old stuff genrally attract some value but I guess you won't have many of those if any.
