What were those coffee bags that people were recommending for bikepacking?

I'm struggling to find the thread 🤦

We had some free samples sent to work. They were vial and ended up being binned.

If Draco's were that small no wonder they were binned.

Draco?

I think they were Taylors. Certainly one of the main brands.

They are all awful, a good instant coffee will be better. Surprisingly the Starbuck VIA sachets are good, and as portable as it gets.

Taylors are ok, but you need 2 in a small cup and they are expensive. I make my own with my usual ground coffee. 100 diy tea bags are only a few £.

Not a fan, can get a similar result at a fraction of the cost and less waste by just adding hot water to ground coffee, leave 2 mins and stir so the grounds sink.

Taylors are pretty weak. Lyons are OK. Percol are much better and they're doing all they can to minimise plastic use so get my vote.

Why not just take something like a GSI drip, then you don't have the waste after as well?

I might have to find an artisan knitter in Hebden Bridge to create an ethical reusable coffee bag for pouring my ground coffee into.

It seems I've stated a conflict worse than the impending Ukraine mini-war. ☹️

As above Percol are decent, Taylors are bobbins. Although I'm actually drinking Lyons at the moment as I managed to pick up 150 bags for about 23 quid. When uou consider that it's £3:50 for 10 Percol that's a fair saving, especially for someone who drinks 3 or 4 a day at work. Taste wise they're perfectly drinkable but I'm no connoisseur, more a filthy tramp who leaves the bag stewing in the (insulated) mug for however long it takes me to drink it.

Why risk looking like a tea drinker when you can use a bripe!?

Just to be 100% clear, with the Taylor ones, you absolutely need two bags for a morning brew. That's why they sell them in boxes with an even number in them.

If you just used 1 in a big cup then it would indeed be rank.

My partner is insanely fussy about her coffee and these are the only bags she'll tolerate:

I used Lyon’s for years when I was working in the jail. 3 or 4 bags in pockets along with a sputum sample pot (sputum free) of Coffee Mate & another with my sugar.
Dead handy when I wasn’t on my home wing.
Great for bothy trips too. They weigh nowt & are faff free.

Edit, I was also highly underwhelmed with Taylor’s. More expensive than Lyon’s too, by a fair bit.

Never tried it, although I can confirm that Tequila tastes like hypoid 90 gear oil.
I digress.

You need a lot in a coffee bags unlike tea.

I was looking at Taylor's coffee bags but did not buy them because the per bag of coffee is too little for my taste (might be good for others who don't drink strong coffee) as the box says 10 bags and 75g in total. Furthermore they use arabica beans the taste will be much more weaker.

I normally buy Taylor's Hot Java beans or ground in rotation and use about 60ml spoon (about 6 table spoons) for 800ml water. I can't afford to put more as 227g will only last me few days if I stretch it a bit.

Coffee bags will make a sort of coffee, but it's never going to be very good - there are better options.
Rombouts make single use filters that make a reasonable cup of coffee. It doesn't take up much room to carry a few with you. Horrendous waste of plastic though.

Really you're better off finding a decent portable coffee maker. Lots of people here like Aeropress, but I reckon this:
https://www.wacaco.com/pages/nanopresso
is much better.

Honestly, coffee bags is a bad route to take.

Just buy an aeropress go and a small container of freshly ground coffee. If that fails, a tea infuser and course ground coffee. Either are better than coffee bags. And I concur that Taylors bags are very weak. And it’s not their coffee per se, just the dose.

As always with coffee threads on STW.... you're all wrong.

These are what you want:

https://www.siamhillscoffee.com/why-drip-coffee/

Not tried that particular brand (I use this one: https://shop.singleo.com.au/products/multichutes-mixed-box-of-chutes), but this is the best "portable" way of doing decent coffee that I've found.

They are all awful, a good instant coffee will be better.

get in the bin

Used or fresh... it makes a big difference.
I also digress.

I've never managed to drink an entire cup made with a bag. Filth.

I'm with the aeropress option, although i still think the Delter Press makes a better brew.

Since you’ll be packing a mug, how about a mug cafetière?
Zyliss at Amazon
Have one at work and can recommend over instant/bag options.

I use a jetboil with a cafetiere adapter.  8 grammes extra weight.  coffee bags are a complete no no to me as they use a lot of packaging that is just not needed.

Reduce, reuse recycle  coffee bags fail this

Been messing around with coffee bags, Aeropresso etc for years. When bikepacking will use coffee bags for ease but unfortunately only able to get Taylors until now….. my son bought me some New Kings Coffee bags from Amazon and these are actually pretty good and one bag is enough, unlike Taylors. Digging deeper into Amazon there are loads of different companies doing coffee bags now, so I feel a little product testing coming on. Who would have thought….

I don’t know what make it was cos it dripped out of a Mk2 Escort gearbox, probably Castrol.

Get my coffee bags from Amazon, £14 for 50. Is it as good as a proper fresh ground brew? No of course not, but its a big step up from instant.

I think most single use coffee bags are compostable (made of paper, rice starch etc.) and you can buy reusable ones as well i think

nickc - reduce is the first step.  If an alternative exists that uses less resources then it matters not if the coffee bag is compostable - you are still using more resources than if you used an aeropress type thing ( after a certain number of cups anyway)

Its only if you cannot "reduce" you go on to "reuse" and only if you cannot "reuse" you go to "recycle"

FWIW, I've got an aeropress but it's extra "stuff" to take on any trip. If I can find half-decent coffee bags it helps with the overnight bikepack/backpack or even just to take on a fell walk with a flask of hot water. Instant coffee is marginally better than nothing.

A half decent coffee to start the day shouldn't be impossible

How well does coffee last after extraction?

Since most people drink lungo / americano style 'out on the hill' could you brew say 4 shots of ristretto (ca 200ml) and put that into an air / water tight container. Then you can dilute with hot water - gives you 2-4 cups depending on strength and cup size, zero waste as your container is reusable, no need to carry brewing equipment or coffee itself, only a means to heat the water....

TJ only buys locally grown beans from brownfield sites. This is only possible because of all that Sunshine on Leith 😜

If I can find half-decent coffee bags it helps with the overnight bikepack/backpack

This is my requirement too. I'll probably buy 2 boxes of coffee bags in a year.

We have the same here with local people in West Yorkshire buying Grumpy Mule coffee "'cos it's local"

I'm not convinced that the beans come from around here

If you like a big hit of caffeine, these are great, best tasting i have found, almost like a thick turkish coffee.

sportsbarista.com

And all the packaging and the bags are compostable..

If like me you like strong coffee then you should try Cornish Stupidly Strong coffee. Very good! I like! My style. 😀

Also Co-op Italian Style Fairtrade Roast & Ground Coffee (think this is the one with a scooter) is also very good as my friend brewed some for me when I visited.

Anything coffee rated less than 4 in strength is not strong enough for me. 🙂

You’ve reminded me that I ride home past a local coffee producer. For some reason I’ve never bought any.

Well I know you'll not be used to people saying this on here chewkw but I'm going to have to disagree with you, hot lava java is bloomin awful!

Their discovery range stuff had some very nice stuff in it mind.

LOL! Not everyone's cup of coffee I guess.
When nothing is available (on sale) Taylor's Hot Java will do for me but it will be 5 table heaped spoon full for 800ml water. I am currently drinking Waitrose's Java. 4 table spoon with 800ml water per brew.
But also have others as backup like the Waitrose's Cafe Direct Machu Picchu (rated 4) from Peru and Mayan Gold from Mexico (rated 5) which are available now. I think these two might be more to British taste?

Obviously they don’t grow, not in Starbeck, but they do roast there. It’s bleeding obvious by the aroma when I pick up passengers 200yards from the place. 😎

You need to leave the bag in for ages, if you preheat the mug it helps.
