what is it? and why are they different. Couldn't play .avi files from my new toy until i'd installed the correct codec. Don't make sense to me. Mind you i am a simpleton.

I just think there is no agreed standard for ripping / copying video on to a file.

yes, and if someone doesn't like an existing standard they invent their own.

I've tried VLC - it was buggy as **** and it doesn't work with Media Center etc.
Plus I don't think it deals with not having new codec any better than Media Player does.
KLcodec pack seems to work wonders...Just install as default and your done!!
VLC comes into its own when watching HD and MP4 stuff.
