The clutch appears to be slipping on my Honda Civic. Its a 2010 2.2 diesel with 68k. If I put my foot down any more than lightly the revs suddenly surge if I go above 2k. There is no real increase in speed a for a second before the clutch gets a grip and normal service resumes.
I've never had a clutch go before (my last diesel was still on the original clutch at 227k miles). The car does about 150 miles a week with plenty of gear changes.
Any guesses as to how long it's got before it goes altogether? Mrs woodislessfussedaboutbikes is 7 months pregnant so I'd prefer not to have any disasters. At the same Christmas and redecorating in prep for another child is making money tight.
Check out the civinfo forum (a great resource otherwise), its a common issue on the 2.2 and plenty are changed under warranty- you may get goodwill if it has full Honda service history..

one of the benifits of fixing them before they get worse is that you may get away without changing flywheel.
if you let it go till its dead then you are guaranteed to be changing flywheels
that said many folk wont change clutches these days without flywheels esp with the DMFs that many diesels have.
The clutch hasn't worn out. Its a known fault, the pressure plate has warped. It may not have a full Honda service history, but there is nothing to lose by ringing up Honda head office and letting them decide if they will offer any help.
I got negotiating with Honda UK I ended up paying a couple of hours discounted labour, and they supplied the parts and the rest of the labour. If on inspection the friction material was worn it wasn't covered. Feedback was the pressure plate was warped and friction material well within acceptable limits.
If it was standard clutch wear, it would slip gradually in high gears at first and only stop slipping when the accelerator was released or the torque tailed off.
Unfortunately it hasn't got full Honda service history. And my local Honda dealer is absolutely appauling. They have never heard of any Honda recalls ever.
I'm loth to go to Honda. Checking the Civinfo pages it seems (understandably) that the dealer has to take off the clutch to see if it's worn out or a warranty fail. At 67k I guess there's a good chance of it just having worn out. In which case I've got a Honda sized repair bill 🙁
If they agree to look at the clutch, ask for photo's and measurement of the friction material...this should be enough to stop them pulling a fast one.
Ours had done about 80k and the clutch well within limits. (might have already had a new clutch, the replacements also had the weakness for a while)
PS. You asked how long...I've heard of people driving for a year or more, but ours was quite changeable, sometimes it would be hard to get up to speed without it letting go, other days hardly any slip. The risk is if it wears out it can damage the flywheel which is extra £££.
Right-ho, I'll give Honda a call in the morning. In the meantime I'm on autotrader checking out the cost of a Focus!
Just to scare you a bit... I've only ever worked in a main dealer but I seen a bill today that shocked even me...

Ford wanted £1200 for a clutch and dmf when the wife's 2.0l Focus started slipping at 50k... Yes, 50k of mostly motorway miles :-/
We escalated to HQ and ended up paying about half that.
I picked up a works people carrier from Arnold Clark in Inverness. I sat in the dealers for 2 hours while they spoke to different people in my company and the company the vehicle was leased from. Being a public holiday didn't help. Eventually the car was released after the £4'200 bill was paid! Various bits of the fuel system as far as I gathered.
If dealers are being fannies a letter to Honda UK usually sorts things out. Good luck.
Though for the sake of a grand (in the absolute worst case) and a decent new clutch it seems daft to hedge your bets on something else.
Dealer service varies. Contact Honda and another dealer. Failing all of that I'd look at a good independent too if yiu know one
Our clutch on 08 2.2 Civic is slipping too. Same as OP, never had a clutch go before. Car is on 105k. I noticed it about 1 year ago whilst I used it to drive to FOD with bikes loaded on. Heard the cost of a new one and thought gulp! I told the missus to watch out for any slippage as its her day2day car. Now when I drive it, I give it a test in high gears/foot down and no slippage?
I dont want to spend +1k on something that might not need changing. Not sure what to do. Carry on regardless until very frequent, or give it mechanic (non Honda, mate of mine) and get him to inspect or change? Is an inspect going to cost shed loads and might as well replace? Is it true that I might not have to change flywheel as well if I change it "early"

Superfi...ifs its specifically slipping momentarily during hard acceleration in 4th, 5th or 6th, and then stops slipping without taking your foot off the throttle, its almost certainly the pressure plate thats warped.
If the revs just rise in the higher gears and continue to slip until you reduce the throttle then its just worn out and will get progressively worse.
No point doing anything if there are currently no symptoms though.
Thanks spooky. I'm not sure TBH. Last time I experienced it was a year ago! Just accelerating off a roundabout. Like I had the clutch in too long. Actually thinking about it, I think it recovered without me backing off as I remember thinking to myself was that me or the clutch! I'll ask my mechanic mate about the pressure plate and investigation costs. 🙂
3 part clutch kit about £130 dual mass flywheel £430 gear oil and whatever the garage charges for labour on top.
