Rarely, if ever, have the words 'Volvo 240 Estate' and 'Classic Car' been used in close proximity without any apparent irony 😉

Do you just mean 'old'?

Prsonally, if I were looking for an estate I'd go for one of those big old Mercs.

W123 Mercedes.

When the world ends in a steaming nuclear inferno, three things will survive;
Keith Richards (I mean, seriously, nothing can kill him, surely?)
Cockroaches
and W123 Mercs. They'll still start first time as well.

With classics, you need to think about running costs / maintenance costs / parts cost probably more than purchase price.

For that money you get a Porsche (decentish 924 or an okayish 944)or you could get a Mini. I doubt I need to tell you the likely difference in running costs.

Apart from the example you gave, you've not said what you need to be able to do with said "classic" - if you need an estate car then I'd agree that an old Merc is the standout choice. If not, then maybe look at warm / hot hatches. Cheaper to look at less obvious brands, so Corollas, not Golfs etc..

Classic sub £2K... Oh you mean a rust bucket!? 😯

How about a classic mini? Wish I never got rid of mine. 😥

I have been helping my friend get this ready for our trip to the Alps..

thing is I know my wife likes them too so it's not *just* a pointless bit of mid-afternoon dreaming.

There's a chance (albeit slim) I could own one. Darn.

W123 Mercedes.

The ones favoured in places like Africa because they're impossible to kill?

I agree. a proper luxury 'classic' car, not like a heap of shit Volvo.

Yep. Mine is affectionately referred to as the West African Taxi on many an occasion.

The only taxi I ever took in West Africa was in a Renault 4 in Ougadougou (sp?).

It had no floor. The driver had a couple of planks of wood across so he could drive.

It was like Fred Flinstones car, we'd all put our feet on the ground when he stopped and then try and lift them up at the right time when he set off again. It was well ventilated, though.

I had one for years like this (not a left hooker or on a german plate though)

[img] [/img]

Fantastic piece of engineering, rural roads covered in cow shit finally killed it in the end as the arse rusted out of it 🙁
CFH I know what you mean about Taxi, picking up my girlfriend (now my wife) from Heathrow I had umpteen people try and flag me down at the terminal 😀
