If you are sitting there trying to get your Chromecast Audio to stream your tunes....don't factory reset it!
I just did, and only when it failed to authenticate on setup did I stumble on the news that that there is a global outage due to expired security certificates. And the advice from Google...don't factory reset the device as it won't be able to receive the update! 🤬
Anyway, if you have reset it, like me, you can try to get it back on your network by changing the date of your phone to before 9th March. I think its worked as it did complete setup, however I can't go into the device in Google Home. Hopefully I'm back at the stage where its listening for its update.
If anyone else is in awaiting the update, please let me know when you can stream again, just in case mine isn't back on the internet!
Thanks for the info. I had wondered wtf was going on. Hope they sort it soon!
Anyone got an idea of the fix date from Google?
Article about it here
https://arstechnica.com/google/2025/03/googles-10-year-old-chromecast-is-busted-but-a-fix-is-coming/
That linked to the official support thread, which just says they aim to fix it as soon as possible...
My 'newly set up' Chromecast is still showing as offline in Google Home 🙁
This is a bit of a pain. I have 2 Chromecast Audios - one plugged into a AudioPro speaker and the other plugged into the stereo in the living room.
Hoping that they sort out a fix sooner, rather than later.
If it comes to it, I can connect to the Audiopro via BT, but would rather not.
We have an old Chromecast in the back of the TV since 2017. It just works and has been really reliable until this week.
We got the audio version in 2015 and that is the same. I really don't want to have to replace either of them as they are pretty good.
My TV and audio are both down too, I'd been anticipating a thread on here about it. I ended up buying a new version of the chromecast with google TV built in, it's very good actually. I really don't want to have to replace the audio one as well but guess I always knew this day would come. Tech giants doing what they do isn't it.
Aah, so thats why I can't cast at the moment then!!....
Does the google tv bit still work? My dauhgter hasn;t said hers is not working, but she doesn't cast to it, just uses it for netfilx and the like...
Seems to be only Gen2 chromecast and the same age audio, later versions still doing their thing nicely.
To be fair I always found them that much of a PITA for not connecting for a multitude of reasons I'd not noticed there was even an outage 😂. Gave up and bought a firestick for the non-smart TV and the audio's got relegated to the 'just in case' box of chargers and cables

I had the fear it was just my "new" one gubbed that I bought from CEX because I left my original in the holiday TV 🙁
Like others have said I really hope they fix it. I've got three of the old Chromecast audios attached to stereos around the house. Yeah, occasionally they fail to connect but on the whole I find them a brilliant way of playing music around the house through existing systems. They were a steal compared to the cost of things like Sonos.
Added to which there doesn't appear to be a direct replacement on the market for the Chromecast audio?
🙄 FFS

those Wiim devices are often mentioned on here and get great reviews. £100 to replace a £25 device is bit cheeky no matter how good they are
They are running out a fix according to the link up above
Unfortunately tried the factory reset before spotting this thread, looks like I'll be waiting a bit longer for a fix
I had an email from Google yesterday saying to sit tight and they'll have a fix soon.
Not used ours in many years but handy to have.
Hope they get a fix out, i've got 5, 3 of them unused from when our local electronics place was punting them out at half price when google discontinued them.
They put the price back up (and up) once they realised sales had gone through the roof!
My primary purpose with these things is streaming iplayer, and secondly other audio around the house from my android phone. As far as I can see the wiim doesn't support iplayer or streaming from Android?
And as your say 100 quid. I'm sure the quality is there but that would be 400 quid to replace the Chromecasts I have. 😬

suggests that you can stream BBC to them
Mine wasn't casting yesterday but did work today so I'm guessing it's been updated, I'm not sure if there is a way to confirm the Chromecast version.
Should be Google outrage, when it works it's great but over the years it's played up not connecting now it's not playing ball again, I've a Google phone might be my last as the 7a has been un reliable especially the keyboard and I must be due an upgrade so might go back to something else
Will try mine again later on. Use it to cast my tablet to TV for turbo sessions so been a frustrating week. Managed to delete it from Google Home before seeing the stuff about the outage and then been unable to link it again since.
My Chromecast Audio is now back online 😍
So to recap, I'd done a hard reset by holding down the button, realised my error and got back through the setup by changing the date on my phone to the morning of 9th March. It then sat in 'devices' in Google Home as greyed out/offline but listening for the update.
Apparently it started working yesterday.
It back and working great again , no need to reset it just connected up as it should, thought I was going to have to splash out.
It was a bargain when I paid £25 at pc world a few years ago
Back working. Chromecast did an automatic update when turned on and then reappeared in Home
Hey Spooky, could you share a bit more detail?
All mine are now wiring with the ecception ofcthe one i hard reset.
So, you set your hone time and date to sat 0300 on the 9th...
Any further rest of the phone necessary?
Turn data off?
Wait a while?
As you can probably guess, minecwont connevt.
Sorry, phone is not allowing me to read what i had typed.; hiden by a you are not alloweto attach filed, bsnner.
Bugger, put them all in a box to "be updated", now i don't know which ones were connected and which i reset and which i'd never used...
I followed a Reddit topic I think, I turned off auto time on my phone and set it to something like midday on the 9th, from memory it needed to be before 3pm ish. Then it would set up the Chromecast, as long as it's asked for your WiFi details and is greyed out in Google Home I think it's then just a waiting game until Google pings it the update. And you can put your phone back to the correct time.
There was another suggestion that airplane mode and then turning back on WiFi would fix it but I think it was red herring, didn't work for me.
Power them all up, wait until a few start working and then you can narrow down the duds in a few days?
Google are still due to email out instructions for those that reset so all is not lost anyway. I got an email a couple of days ago saying they are working on the problem so if you got that you'll presumably get further updates.
Set your phone to the 8th. Then look for the devices in Google home. Open each one and add/connect if required. This will get it back on the WiFi network unless you've wiped out the WiFi settings in which case you'll have to re-enter them as you did when you first connected it. Once connected to a device go to settings and reboot.
Reset your phone to automatic time/date.
Thanks. I wondered if i was missing a subtle detail.
Still no luck though.
Guess i need to wait to see what mr google himself suggests.
Just tried to date trick using a tablet rather than my phone. Set the date to March 6, and added it as a new device in Google Home and bingo. I can see it on tablet and phone now and casting from my proper date phone. Was concerned as had tried the factory reset previously, but seems all good. Hopefully the update will get pushed in due course.
Well, got 3 of them connected to the network, waiting on updates. Other two are just looking at me and blinking.
I think it's really just a case of getting them talking on BT, then getting them on to the WiFi. Iirc if they're then rebooted they'll grab the latest version of code when they start up. You may need to 'forget' them in home and then add them again?

Yeah
, I couldn't find the cca as it's original name, but adding a device allowed me to find the cca and add using a new name
Seem that the latest verdion of 'home' will recover reset devices. Awaiting its rollout here in uk.
Fingers crossed.
Thanks all.
Received an email from Google this morning about the firmware update, checked my device and it's updated and working normally again, this looks like an interesting alternative and a reasonable price too.
Im sure you are all on the edge of your seats, desparate for an update...
Updated google home app now available to me.
It did what it said ot would; it allowed me to reconnect to my hard reset CCA.
Normal service has been resumed.
Sleep easy folks.
As an aside, the purchase of an HDMI audio splitter (<£10), allows a (video) chromecast to work as a CCA.
I'm currently listening to Spotify cast to my Chromecast and for my lugs The girl from Ipanema sounds great although I think it's my Marantz amp and Aegis speakers making it good
Now playing I have forgiven you Jesus by that fruitcake Morrissey but he has a great sounding back catalogue
I gave up waiting, dragged an older, unused raspberrypi out of my toy box and installed volumio.
The Home app still isn't updated here yet.
