Can you believe they're STILL arguing over ordaining women as "Bishops"? Whatever THAT is...

I think it has something to do with not having enough loos of the right type or something.

Right, first off this is the 'B&B'
[img] [/img]
Which isn't really a 'B&B', but a small hotel, but B&B sounds more quaint and makes people think we're just talking about a little room in someone's house.

The website doesn't make it quite clear that this is a Christian building with a particular subset of Christian rules.
This is the front page
http://www.chymorvah.co.uk/index.html
Just normal hotel stuff.

On the booking page there is a special note
http://www.chymorvah.co.uk/bookingform.html

This is the booking page from June 2008
http://web.archive.org/web/20080611115650/www.chymorvah.co.uk/bookingform.html

Interestingly the text has changed from in June 2008

"Here at Chymorvah we have few rules, but please note, that out of a deep regard for marriage we prefer to let double accommodation to heterosexual married couples only - thank you."

to

"Here at Chymorvah we have few rules, but please note that as Christians we have a deep regard for marriage(being the union of one man to one woman for life to the exclusion of all others).

Therefore, although we extend to all a warm welcome to our home, our double bedded accommodation is not available to unmarried couples – Thank you."

If you go to 2004 there is no text
http://web.archive.org/web/20040401131928/www.chymorvah.co.uk/bookingform.html

Of course if you looked at the website, the rooms, the prices then phoned up to book. You wouldn't see this message any way.

they're STILL arguing over ordaining women as "Bishops"

The Muslim religion is still struggling with the concept that possesing a female body isn't an incitement to rape and thus doesn't immediately require full coverage when, in fact, a bit of self control from those with male bodies is all that's required.

I can see these two having similar trouble trying to book a double room in Qatar during the world cup...

Law says you can't discriminate. They did. So they broke the law and paid the price. Simple. Probably not going to book a weekend away with them any time soon though.

Do gay couples have less freedom of choice than Christians? Don't they have the right to choose which hotel they stay in?

...persecute a Christian couple for trying to exercise their right to insist that couples who share beds in THEIR home, should be married in accordance with their religion.

Let's assume they're Catholics - if you get married in a registry office, you aren't married according to the Church as you haven't been married in front of God. Does the above statement mean that they insist on guests providing Catholic marriage certificates, I doubt it. I suspect that they chose this 'line' as their lawyer suggested it...it's more likely that they are bigotted towards homosexuals, and they refused them as guests purely because they were gay.

No, I'd fight to the death for freedom of choice.

Given your willingness to fight to the death, please don't read the threads about the recent drama on the A&A threads, I wouldn't want certain people to be forced to assume new identities.

I'm assuming the B&B owners asked for marriage certificates, and also checked that their guests weren't remarried divorcees, and had never had affairs.

Except they allowed non-married couples to stay in their double rooms.

"Mr & Mrs Bull’s argument that they denied double rooms to all unmarried people, not just homosexuals, has been shown to be false by one of the National Secular Society’s Council members, Dr Ray Newton. He stayed at this hotel in a double room with an unmarried partner – they registered under different names – but they were not challenged, and we understand that the hotel’s website made no reference to declining unmarried heterosexual couples."

Yeahp, yeahp, it'll be organic. Made from sustainable wooden trees and coloured with natural vegetable dyes. None of which will be harmed in the process of making it.

I bet the BnB owners have featured on http://ifyoulikeitsomuchwhydontyougolivethere.com/

Dafties. Turning people away cause some mythical fairy maybe mentioned something about men who like each other.

No room in this day and age for ancient and destructive attitudes such as theirs.

It's not the fact that the couple were gay that I see as the problem, it's the fact that anyone should be told who they can and can't do business with.

I choose who I want to do business with on a daily basis, and I feel it's nobody's business but my own and I don't think I should have to justify it. The couple *should* have the right to decide whether or not they want to enter into a business contract with whoever.

The only problem I have that could possibly be linked to the gay aspect of this situation is that the pro-homosexuality lobby are particularly vociferous and - as in this case - are prepared to bring these cases in the promotion of their political cause, without any consideration to the morality of a crusade like this, or the ordinary people that they are prosecuting. It stinks.

We're talking about a very twee Christian couple that open their home up as a B&B to other Christians where they can discuss their fairy tails and read the myriad god-bothery pamphlets that they leave strewn around the place. Why on earth would a pair of non religious, affluent, educated men want to stay in a place like that anyway? One reason only: to make an example of what they perceived to be some sort of persecution - the denial of a right that they probably didn't even want in the first place.

More than happy for people to be offended on my behalf, particularly if they have biscuits (malted milk for preference).

Me and Mr. Toab were once asked not to come back to a pub in the depths of Welsh Wales, but mainly cos Mr. Toab wouldn't keep his hands to himself and it was upsetting the regulars, who were keeping the business going. The managment were really very polite about it and I didn't really feel I could blame them.

thank God that on a topic about a christian discriminating against gay people we managed to demonise the Mulsims attitude to women... I was worried for a moment then that all this egalitarian nonesense that had got hold of the brethren thank God we know who the real badies are oh yes an Gypsies
EDIT: It actually askes nbothe males and females to dress modestly and that females should cover their hair ...the othe rstuff is mor ecultural than religous as you can find non Muslims who were the Burkha as well ...but you knew all that and were just toying with us.

My kids vegan farm has animals and we liberate them daily from the yoke of servitude and set them free as equals

The law in this country is pretty clear - you are not allowed to discriminate in the provision of goods and services - all must have equal access

The above sentence probably answers your concerns legally if not necessarily to your satisfaction.

But... does this ruling mean that all the Camp Sites, B&Bs, etc., that refuse single-sex parties [eg a group of male MTBers] will have to change their rules?

Shibboleth i notice your user name is a biblical code word? I notice that your description:"We're talking about a very twee Christian couple that open their home up as a B&B to other Christians" bears no relation to the truth as per the business in questions web site.

Is there a reason you started this thread? What are your views on theirs do you agree that discriminating against people on the basis of their sexuality is repugnant?

I don't agree with their views on marriage, and I have no problem at all with homosexuality (apart from the fissures). I don't have any religious beliefs either. But I believe that their religious views should be respected by the law in the same way that we tend to respect other religions and cultures in this country.

I feel that the militant pro-homo lobby are the real bigots in this case, as they refuse to respect other people's beliefs.

Personally, I'd be more than happy for them to stay under my roof and kick each other's back doors in to their hearts content... As long as they don't wipe on the curtains.

What gay rights groups are campigning to ban religions rather than end prejudice towards gay people .
They are only asking that religous people treat them like everyone else not sure how you think that means they have a lack of respect rather than the Christians have a lack of respect for them

thing is, no-where in the bible does it say you shouldn't let a gay couple, or an unmarried couple, sleep in your spare room. It does say you shouldn't have sex unless you're married (however the definition of married is a little blurry), and if you do so you'll be punished, but no-where does it suggest you should do the punishing..

Thanks for the clarification but what's all the fuss about then Christianity has just as much respect and toleration under the law as any other belief and if you run a business you can expect to have to obey the law and are not allowed a religious cop out if you don't obey the law.

Surely a country where we are all equal and you are not allowed to discriminate against people and refuse service to them on the grounds of race gender religion or sexuality is a good thing and if any arbitrary or geographic boundary deserves self sacrifice then that is one.

Gays want you to undress in order to enter them ...... is this your claim now?

Muslims asks you to remove your shoes as they tend to pray in their own homes and it is an attempt to keep their floor clean as has alrerady been explained. It is not a universal Muslim Thing I would make you take your shoes off as well but of course I would not let you enter my dwelling place as you are just not my type.

The issue isn't about whether or not they dislike gay people, the issue is that they run a business, which like all businesses is subject to discrimination laws and they fell foul of those laws.

They were fined, and the matter should be closed. They may have repulsive views, but these views shouldn't be allowed to translate into a commercial enterprise.

I hope that this case might set a precedent and get some of the backwards privileges that the church enjoys regarding woman bishops changed as well.

Shibby seems to tun up every few months or so, says something highly contentious that is guaranteed to get a reaction, insult people left right and centre, then disappear again. And probbly bask in his 'notoriety'.

Strikes me as a reasonably intelligent person, so I can only assume he's a bit of a troll really.

As for the ruling itself; good result in my onion. About time people moved into the 21st century and started thinking for themselves really.

Let's add some perspective with a sobering story...

My younger brother once lived with A Gay...and one day he walked in on him and his 'friend' kissing in the kitchen. Yes, that's right, near the food preparation areas!

Needless to say, whenever I visited I made sure we ate out.
