I agree entirely about the resources but it's no different to what we're doing
Actually it is. That's one of the reasons why the Chinese are being so successful in pushing the West out of Africa. African countries are getting a much deal out of the Chinese than they are getting/have got from Western countries.
Not only do they tend to get a fairer price for their minerals and natural resources, but the deals usually include training the locals as surveyors, technicians, etc. And helping to build the infrastructure such as roads hospitals etc.
Of course this is also highly beneficial to the Chinese, as they also need the roads, hospitals, etc in Africa for themselves. The big difference is that the Chinese companies and organisations in Africa tend to be owned by the Chinese state/government which means that they are all working together and they can provide a 'joined-up' package with a common goal.
Western companies are at a huge disadvantage in that respect, as they tend to work completely independently of each other. The future of Africa lies with China I fear - the West had it's chance and blew it.
i think i'd rather have the chinese socialists in power as opposed to many 'western' regimes.
you are deluded beyond belief

You know what happened in that square and the wider crackdown where god knows how many people disappeared or were locked up?
Interesting to see China influencing more and more countries on the Horn of Africa, Somalia etc, that have been sidelined by the Western Powers, how long before not only do they have a credible "blue water" Navy, but ports on Foreign Territories as well.
When they decide to move the Yuan away from the Dollar, then interesting times...

Well I would certainly prefer to be a worker living in China than a worker living in India, that's for sure. Is India a "Western country" ?
btw, I am very strongly opposed the regime in Beijing, in case anyone thinks otherwise.
I don't doubt your source for the Africa stuff Ernie, but that's not something I've heard before. Do you recall where it came from?

Source for what ...... what's happening in Africa ? No single source..... I just try to pay attention to what's
going on ๐
OK. It just contrasts with the stuff about people being forcibly cleared out of areas of the Sudan to make way for chinese oil exploitation which was a minor stink the other year, and the very very big payment to Congo that the Chinese government made for mineral rights there, supposedly knowing full well they were going to set off another war (that was Tim Butcher, possibly in the Statesman).
I quite agree that Chinese influence in Africa is a biggie, was just interested in case you had a good article up your sleeve. ๐
Stop buying made in China and it will become Russia No.2.
Boycott Chinese goods-it's the only way.

I have to agree with the "deluded" comment, but given where China was politically and economically at the end of WW2 I don't think any other kind of regime could have improved the lot of the vast majority of ordinary Chinese people so much in so little time, "Cultural Revolution" and "Great Leap Forward" notwithstanding.
Given the fact that the average Chinese is vastly better off economically, socially and politically now than at any point in the last 5000 years, I find a good deal of the posts on here ill informed and extremely blinkered.
They may well have some way to go before they achive the level of arrogance that we have when viewing other peoples societies, but I can assure you they will get there eventually, and look down on us and our way of life. There are no realisitic comparisions between China today and China during the cultural revolution, even less with Soviet Russia.
"Given the fact that the average Chinese is vastly better off economically, socially and politically now than at any point in the last 5000 years"
I think the argument is not that they're better off than they were but how much better off they might be under a different type of government.
probably 95% of the worlds population are better off now than their ancestors were 5000 years ago so it's hardly a truumph for socialism.
I don't think those people in those tanks are very bright. Don't they realise they won't damage the tank if they just run them over the blood will hose off with out damage to the paint work ๐
Chinese military parades always look amusingly camp, to me...

Thats not what I said.

High theatre and like the North Koreans they always march too fast?!

Too late, I have a Chinese in our house ๐
