Watched the 60th anniversary celebrations last night in Tianniman Square. Scared, in the time honoured tradition of empire building we are looking at a bigger power in the future than any that has been before.
Possibly as cruel as Britain was? Crueler?
If it scares, just try and keep away from it then. Sensible policies for a happier Britain!
all the guns, tanks, missiles and other nasty stuff were made from plastic.
all the metal is now used to produce vastly overpriced cycle components......... 8)
....... scary and also about to run low on water - northern aquifers are dry, hence they'll be looking elsewhere sometime soon....
Personally I'm more scared of Pyrex.
Racist...
Tupperware's a bit iffy as well if you ask me...
16stonepig....soon they will be coming to craggy island ๐ฏ
We have nothing to fear but fear itself.....
....oh and zombies.
Why is China called China anyway, damn silly name for a place, it's like calling your country carpet. Is there a country called Carpet? that'd be scary.
You couldnt call China carpet. Although if there was a hushed up scandal leaked out the redtops would have an easy task creating the headlines I guess..
To those mocking, the PLA have probably spotted this thread, noted your names and mapped your addresses so when the first strike comes.....
I like chinese
they only come up to your knees
they are cute, and cuddly and willing to please.
YES

I'll be alright I can just be absorbed into the second biggest economy of the world.
Like MTBfix said the PLA are probably hacking your computer now. Oh its a MAC you don't need anti virus etc.. because no one wants to hack into them. LOL
Napoleon Bonaparte once said of China :
"Here lies a sleeping giant, let him sleep, for when he wakes up, he will shock the world".
Pretty astute observation by the geezer, considering how long ago it was made. How did he have so much insight into the future - did he borrow the time machine in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure or sumfink ? ๐

He was very short.

Nah, he's a relative of forked souls ๐
No ernie he never said that. He said:

Yer not the only one!
Is there an official term for this? Can I safely avoid chinese people or will I have to join Nick Griffin ๐
I think I'd be more worried about the mess if China broke up rather than what's there now. My impression is that they're still fairly inward looking (unfortunate if you hold opposing views to the government). I believe military spending is still significantly less than the US and most likely the EU. Unlike certain certain nations I don't believe they've attacked any other countries recently. I suspect that their military although large is nowhere as advanced as most western nations.
I would have thought that their bigger concerns are development, internal 'policing', trade and expanding their resource base by dealing with countries which the west would not want to, feeding the population and cleaning up the severe environmental damage which they're busy inflicting on themselves.
But it is over 1 billion of the world population. At some point I suspect they will play a bigger role on the world stage the the UK's 60 million.

No he was not, as he was of average height for the time.
They occupy some of their neibours - Tibet for example. They want Tiawan back.
obama is just behind china and girl in the 'i am afraid' autofill.......
I think the new Austin Powers film should be shot in China
(totally random......)
At that ^^^^ pic.
Oh to be a criminal overlord living in a volcano.... Even better than 'sharks wi frikkin lazer beams'.

I believe the Chinese economy is now the 4th largest in the world - they knocked Britain into 5th place a while back. So they already have more clout than Britain in that respect. Indeed many believe that it will be China that pulls the world out of recession.
China hasn't really been inward looking at all, that is part of the reason why it has experienced such uneven development. However, since the global recession this has now dramatically changed. Realising their mistake in their over reliance on exports (which have been buggered by the global recession) they are looking at developing their own internal markets. Adding to that, the fact that the communist party is fully aware that to maintain the general support of the people, they must not continue to ignore those in the rural areas. The last thing they want to do is lose their grip on power.
And I wouldn't underestimate China's technical abilities. Their armed forces might be primitive in many ways, but they have a fair understanding of advanced technology - they have a pretty impressive space programme.
imo
I can't get that Monthy Python song out of my head now.
Finland Finland Finland, the place where I quite want to be....
Eating breakfast or dinner, or just watching TV....
Ah that's better.
I've always thought their was something quite nice about North Korean soldiers ....
She can kick the **** out of me anyday 8)
Inward looking?
Is that why they are building an enormous road out of Nairobi to Mombassa at the moment, nothing to do with looking to rip everything they can out of Africa*
But they are looking for resources all over.
*Ok I'm aware that we started this.
I believe military spending is still significantly less than the US and most likely the EU
No doubt, but since most of it is internally sourced they're getting a lot more for their money than the simple figures would suggest. Look at the size of their military, not what it costs them.
OK, I'll change that to inward looking in terms of security apart from obvious examples. I took the OP to be about military strength from the parades. As far as I know China doesn't have a large proportion of it's military outside of it's borders, unlike us. I'd be surprised if there was major conflict involving China over the next couple of years unless it's on their door-step, like Taiwan. Give it 20 years and then we might be thinking differently!
I agree entirely about the resources but it's no different to what we're doing - not that that makes it acceptable. Libya anyone?
This incident was enormously significant. The ability to deny US naval power free access to the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific potentially changes the balance of power right across the world.
an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk
Thats crackers. Im guessing there were soo many ships/hulls etc on the exercise that it was info overload for everyone involved.
It shouldn't be. A carrier travels within the perimeter of its battle group, and is theoretically simply not exposed to submarine incursion into striking distance.
That the Chinese had developed their ability to conceal and manouevre submaries within that perimeter means that, put bluntly, US carriers are not as safe in the china seas as was believed. If that is the case then Taiwan is not by any means necessarily defensible. If Taiwan goes, US credibility in the entire Asia/Pacific is severely damaged, and China looks to be in a vastly stronger global position with the US seriously reduced.
More importantly I wonder what the interior of a Chinese sub looks like? A kinda China town with pipes? Laundry hanging everywhere?
That is the important thing, certainly. ๐ ๐
Another reason to keep carriers at a distance.
From the Chinese perspective why should the US be able to dominate the Pacific. Not a great example but would we be that happy if Argentina (randomly chosen!) kept a large military force near our waters. I am playing devils advocate and despite the short-comings of the US I'd rather that they were the sole superpower rather than China given the Chinese government's human-rights record.
The balance of power will change with the ability of the US to act alone diminishing. That's even more the case with the UK. Even the US don't see us as a major partner anymore so I'm not sure how long we think we can (and can afford) to punch above our weight. When China and India, which will have an even bigger population, wake up we're going to look like very small fry.
midgebait. Good point.
Getting back to Horas OP, so is that more so than the antics of our own government and that of America?

They occupy some of their neibours - Tibet for example. They want Tiawan back.
And they have occupied Tibet for pretty much all of the last 900 years with the exception of a few years at the start of this century when they were whooping arse internally. So anyway, are you honestly suggesting that Tibet be returned to a feudal system under the Dali Lama ?
Most countries moved past that a century or so ago.
Regarding Taiwan, they actually want the contents of the Chinese treasury that was stolen by the Kuomintang in theor retreat from the mainland.
i think i'd rather have the chinese socialists in power as opposed to many 'western' regimes.
