I'm going to buy my nephew his first watch for his birthday. He'll be six.

He can't yet tell the time, so I'd like one that will help him to learn. Any recommendations?

I've seen some like the one below, and while I like the clear numbers, I don't like the 'Past' and 'To' halves of the dial. I don't think this really gets over the concept of there being 60 minutes in an hour very well. Am I wrong?

Swatch tiktak I think it's called. Reasonable value and machine washable.

That's what my son has anyway.

Patek Phillipe. Anything else is just child abuse.

i wouldn't worry too much about it - telling the time at that age is not on their agenda! you're better off getting a nice one i.e ben 10 that has digital numbers!

Stoner - he can inherit my Speedmaster, but not quite yet. And I need to buy it first ๐Ÿ˜‰

aleigh - no digitals, he's dying to learn how to tell the time.

Breitling Emergency is perfect for a six year old. ๐Ÿ˜†

On a serious note - this has got to be in the top three.

It's got diggers on the strap and everyfink.

@oddjob Flik Flak, not tiktak - we got one for my eldest daughter this year, seems pretty good quality, comes in a nice gift pack. Hers was an explorer pack, it came with a mini-torch, compass etc., the camouflage detailing would be fine but perhaps not in pink...

Example (for boys) here: http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Watch-Gift-Flik-Flak/dp/B0019UOWRW

My first watch was a Simpsons one, it was great. Get him something fun, not one that looks like his grandad's (first picture).

timex adventure type thing- something rough and tough.

Why give a kid a watch anyway? Does he need to be that organised if he's a kid?

If he likes Lego they do a few... Power miners, Police, Star Wars. And they come with a mini figure too... My lad has this one

Because the kid wants one, it's a nice present for an uncle to give his nephew, he'll need to learn how to tell the time at some point in his life...

You're not wrong about the rough and tough bit, make sure you get a proper waterproof watch, not just a water resistant one.
