Mrs Solarider would like to get Solarider Jnr a climbing frame for the garden. Something wooden with a slide, swing and some sort of house.
A couple of questions for this in the know:
1) Does anybody have one, and do the kids actually use it once the novelty wears off? He loves the playground in the park, but I am just not sure he would get the use out of it and it will dominate the garden for years to come.
2) Any recommendations for brands and types?
3) Have you just put it on the lawn, or gone the whole hog with something underneath?
Thanks All!
We were looking at the same and ended up with a trampoline instead. If you’re not 100% sold there are some good used bargains that crop up on eBay.
We got a monstrosity from Wickey, two towers, a wobbly bridge, rope ladders, two swings, slide, firemans pole etc. Have to say it was quite an effort to build, but my boys are on it loads. We put a border around it and used rubber chips underneath. Sometimes I hang my punchbag from the swings and I will be putting some gymnastics rings up there too, the swings are probably used more than anything. Luckily I have a big garden, so it isn't too obtrusive and it looks nice anyway.
Not sure I would buy the same make again, it is great now built, but it wasn't easy. We expected a giant airfix model ready to go, but you have to measure, mark and drill almost every bit of wood!
Trampolines are great too, a fraction of the cost and take a fraction of the time to build, just keep the drunken adults off!
We have a basic slide with 2 swings... it same with a little tower.
This got grafted onto what we call the "fort" ... but is was also about the cheapest way to buy the slide and swings anyway. . I also put climbing holds onto various bits so he can climb around it.
He tends to use it more when he has friends over but I think that has a lot about him being an only child and being more fun with other kids. YMMV .. He seems to have more fun climbing on the roof sometimes than the swings and stuff.
We sometimes sleep out in the fort at weekends...
we've got one similar to the one SteveXTC has but ours has monkey bars at the request of eldest daughter who made it a very clear requirement 🙂 it gets used by both so no regrets but the trampoline is used more
they come in a massive kit that looks a nightmare but it just takes time and coffee, check that they send the right one before opening the box!
We have one (a big wooden thing with two swings, a rope ladder, slide, climbing net, hammock and hanging bars (we use carabiners to clip and unclip some of the accessories as there isn't room for them all at the same time) and out two love it (had it 4 years now). It gets most use when they have friends round though.
I'd say they probably use it and their trampoline equally.
I often toy with this idea... teh kids have got a cool playhouse in the garden, and recently bought a tramapoline from Asda..£90 so pretty cheap.
They love to bounce. However, at times it's like WFC in there.. despite being 8 and 3, I'd put my money on the 3 year old...

Dr P opined thusly....

You're not an orthopaedic surgeon then?
They're not huge trampoline fans.
Keeps them busy mind you.
We have a fairly big one - TP is the brand I think. Gets good use from my daughter, in fact she's requesting monkey bars for it now as that's the on thing missing. They are dominating items, so if the kids aren't interested it will be a problem.
There's loads on ebay if you have / can get a van and don't mind going round to take one apart. I did this the night before my daughter's birthday - got to bed past 3am it took that long to disassmble / reassemble and I couldn't show her a pile of logs in a van for a birthday present [actually I could, but my wife forbade it].
We bought this on last year.

It was from FatMoose and was shipped direct from Germany in about 10 days. It was quite expensive but the quality is excellent, everything fitted together perfectly and all the bits including screws and bolts (but not the ground anchors) were supplied with it.
Our daughter loves it and plays with it every day it's not raining.
PS. The cross bar for the swing is level, it is the fence that the previous owner built that is not! and the rest of the area has been turfed so it doesn't look like a building site now.

Ha! Nope... but i can completely see the danges of Trampolenes WITHOUT the safety netting - my daughter pings from side to side.. without it she'd be a bundle of fractures!!

This came with Monkey bars but after the grafting to the "fort" there wasn't room for them...
We don't have one, though we do seem to have lots of other outdoor things on our decking (like a little house on stilts). Our garden isn't big enough for a proper one
My parents bought a proper galvanised steel one for when me and my sister were kids. My kids now play on the same one, that's pretty good value when you think about it. It's been going for around 30 years
Thanks all. Every trampoline I have ever seen in a garden just seems to act like a giant leaf collector, so that's definitely not on the cards!
Some great feedback as ever. When in doubt my wife always asks 'why don't you post something on "that bike site"' and STW never fails to impress!
We got a wooden TP (kingswood iirc) one over 10yrs ago. Bloody expensive, even more so now but it has lasted, and you can get different bits for it to keep the kids entertained. We started with a baby swing and slide then got the bigger swing and slide as the kids grew, also added a rope swing and climbing wall bit. Looking to pass it on to the brother in law as my kids have kinda out grown it now, so it certainly lasts well.
Flickr is down, otherwise I would show you our one of a few years back..
Aldi £179.99 might be a good place to start. They have some swings and stuff too. I use a swing, a long fence post, suitably drilled, and a convenient pair of trees.
