I need to buy a chalk bag as a gift for my brother. He pretty much only climbs indoors; mostly bouldering.

I have no idea about chalk bags. I'm guessing a medium sort of size is most appropriate?

If he only boulders then a big bag would be better. If he occasionally puts a harness on then a medium bag that he can put around his waist and will fit a hand in easily would be best.

Indoor walls might not allow loose chalk, so those big bucket-on-the-floor bags might be inappropriate.

Safest would be a small or medium one and pop a chalk ball in it.

Get a big bag so much better if bouldering and he can always put chalk balls in a big bag

Bucket on the floor are the most common type at any bouldering wall.
Rock+Run are the best for those.
PX have a cheap selection of wearable ones

If he's been climbing for a while and is into posh brands, I'd consider an Organic bucket chalk bag (roughly 30 quid), Moon stuff is also nice.

Indoor walls might not allow loose chalk

A rule imposed by every wall ever and ignored by every climber ever.

If you're bouldering you're climbing, what, 10-15 feet? If it holds more than a tennis ball it's probably too big.

It's not the size, it's the fact it stands up by-itself, ahem..

When I climbed regularly I had both, and tbh, the bucket was a faff. It didn't fit into a folded over boulder mat very well when at the crag and you'd need 2 bags anyway if you climbed routes as well as bouldered (wall or crag). At a public indoor wall it's hard to see past a small/med bag and a chalk ball.

But if I had my own woody, then i'd have bucket bag in there, ready for use all the time.

My local wall sells loose chalk, so I don't think that's an issue. If he climbs routes get him a small one, if he boulders get him any size.

But if he climbs indoors, he's probably already got one. I've only ever bought one chalk bag in 25 years, and it still works just fine. How about a good quality bouldering brush - they wear out pretty quick?
