Wondered if anyone used a ceramic hob and what you thought of it?

Fitting a new kitchen soon and weighing up options

Have lived with one before - wouldn't touch with a bargepole, completely unpredictable and no control, just what you don't want for cooking with really!

Maybe newer, more expensive ones are better, but I just would't risk it when gas is just so bloody good to cook with.

Conversely,

I love mine. Piece of cake to clean, as controllable as you can get without going to gas, don't need to replace all your pans. Coming from the old coils, it was a revelation. I honestly don't know where Z11 gets 'unpredictable' from, I can only think that his was old / broken / otherwise different to mine.

Gas is the best option for hobs, but I don't have a gas supply in the kitchen.

We've got gas in the current kitchen but the new one is at the other side of the house and I figure re routing the gas through the house could be pricey but that's another thread

Had one but replaced for an induction one when we refurbished the kitchen.

After getting used to the induction one I'd only ever go to gas if I were to change again. Plus you get to change your naff old saucepans for nice shiny new ones!! 😉

Induction hob is the way to go, cost a bit more but worth it.

Induction here and a pricey one. Save your money and get a gas one IMO.

If I've had it on 9 (full) then decide to now simmer at say 2. It still thinks it should be upto 9 (feels like). You have to zero it then go upto 2.

We had one in a rented house, it was god-awful. Took a year to heat up, played silly buggers once it was hot.

I'll accept that modern ones are more reliable but it put me off.

Gas, on now! Now, off! That's a heat source I can rely on. #1

#1 Until the Russians cut us off.

My ceramic is nearly 4 yrs old and is shit!! Fagor! Bought good quality cooker dishwasher etc but was talked into that hunk of shit by a salesman which I normally avoid!! Has the predictability and controllability of a 5 yr old child with ADHD!!!

pros - it was cheap
Cons- takes a while to heat up
does not cool as soon as you turn it down- pain if simmering say porridge or a suace
Utter pain to clean

Probably would have again if I had to have electric as better than the electric alternatives but still a bit rubbish

Get a decent induction, it's the bees. We've had a NEF one for about 5 years and it's been totally reliable and as instantly controllable as gas (without the grease). Sounds like Hora's is faulty.

They are a bit more expensive especially if you need new pans but gas wasn't an option where we live.

Mine certainly work.

Another vote for induction, we have a neff one and it's as good as having gas in terms of instant controllable heat.

Could you run a new gas pipe around the outside of the house from the meter box? In the total cost of a new kitchen, a run of gas pipe isn't going to be too much.

We had gas in the old house but with no gas supply to the new house we bought a 2 induction ring 2 halogen ring AEG so we wouldn't have to replace every non-magnetic pan at the same time.

Induction is great, every bit as fast and controllable as gas and the hob is easier to clean than our carefully chosen for its cleanability gas hob was. The halogen rings are really annoying compared to the induction - slow to heat up, slow to cool down.

Only quibble in use was that you couldn't run the two induction rings on full whack at the same time, which is quite a quibble.

However, we bought the AEG four years ago, almost to the day, and last week it went bang while using one of the induction rings and now shows an electronic error and won't do anything, induction or halogen. Out of warranty of course and AEG say well over £200 for them to repair (cost £400 to buy).

The local and highly recommended repair shop say that happens all the time to cheaper induction hobs, and they only have confidence in Miele and Neff. Obviously that's anecdotal from one shop, but we'll be keeping it in mind if we decide to replace rather than repair.

(And if we replace, it'll be with four induction rings and a couple of new pans, having checked the model will run more than one ring on full power.)

Mine is great. Easy to clean, self moderates the temperature, and quick to adjust heat. Much better than the old plate one i had in my old place.

Got one here now. I'd prefer gas like we have in the UK house but it's better than the shitty electric thing we had before.

Induction hobs are the closest to gas for heat and control.
What I´d really love is one of these:

I always get the impression that half the people on threads about Inductions hobs are thinking of ceramic hobs when they complain how crap they are.
