Ok I am doing some training and the course work is on a CD, the dams thing wont play in my lap top. Everything else works so can I assume the CD is borked?

Try hoovering it out. Have had issues with dust accumulation in rarely used drives. Replacing them is usually fairly cheap and easy or get a usb external one

Do other discs work?

Redistribute the grease on the lens carriage.

Cougar, yeah other discs work, you can hear it trying then it clunks a few times that's it.

Tried cleaning the disc with a lens cloth?
