Today was our cat's annual MOT. He's 17, does bugger all except wander around the house moaning, sleeping and farting.

Usual thing of the Vet trying to upsell, Flea stuff, working tablets and "Special" food, but then comes some other interesting recommendations:

Concern a) He refuses to drink water from his Bowl, preferring licking the bath. The Vets response - buy him a water fountain

Concern b) He does have little accidents around the house from time to time. The Vets response - too late for a cat flap, buy him an enclosed litter tray

Concern c) He gets agitated aggressive if we wash his favourite fluffy Cat cushion. The Vets response - upgrade his cushion with something closer knit to help lower the chance flea infestation, something like a silk/velvet affair.

Concern d) He seems a bit dum sometimes like he's lost his marbles. The Vets response, he's probably got Cat altziemers, it may be help to place cat eye-level pictures en-route to rooms to help him remember where they are.

I mean FFS, I'm not sure if its the cat (with more intelligence than I've given him credit for) or the Vet thats taking the piss.

interesting - one of ours does this! Will drink from the pond, any standing water outside, lick the bath, etc, anything except his bowl. If someone goes into the bathroom he'll bolt in there & jump up on the bath & wait for the tap to be turned on for him 🤣 Just had a look online and you can get little battery operated cat water fountains 😃

interesting – one of ours does this!

We have an 8yo and two kittens. The cat Mollie will only drink from glasses of water on our bedside cabinet, and one of the two kittens Freya thinks the water bowl is a great toy and will splishy-splashy in it until she upends it. I have a two foot square of kitchen floor that's never been so clean.

We very nearly had a combination the other day. Freya was moments away from shoving a full glass of water off the cabinet and onto our expensive new bedroom carpet. I only just stopped her in time because the 'clunk' as it was pushed off the coaster woke me up.

Yep, we've a Bengal tabby who is really into moaning at EVERYTHING. He moans if he can see the bottom of his food bowl, if it's raining outside, if I'm on a Teams call and am unavailable for belly rub duties, if it's November, if the radio isn't switched on or if it's not actually November but he thinks that it is.

The only thing that seems to shut him up is for me to pick him up and cuddle him in my arms while I try and work.

As for Kryt's cat,

17 is a good age. My old girl was 18 when I had to make The Decision and she was pretty knackered by then. It absolutely broke me but what can you do.

Hard really to comment on the vet's advice. Was it upselling, do they actually sell all those things?

He refuses to drink water from his Bowl, preferring licking the bath.

So long as the bath is clean I'm not seeing a problem here? Is one particularly fresher water than the other? He's doing well to be getting in and out of the bath TBH.

He does have little accidents around the house from time to time.

Extra litter trays might not be a bad idea, one upstairs and one down maybe, so he doesn't have to walk so far when he needs to go. You also need to really properly clean any accidents so that the scent doesn't indicate a new toilet to him.

He gets agitated aggressive if we wash his favourite fluffy Cat cushion.

Don't do that then? How grubby can it be that a quick vac won't sort?

He seems a bit dum sometimes like he’s lost his marbles.

Dunno about this one. Our other kitten doesn't have any marbles to start with, though I appreciate that's of little help to you.

I was sceptical but the water fountains do indeed work. Get a plug in one rather than battery and see if you can hear it running first as if it's noisy it will drive you mad

Our last cat never drank from his bowl - but still, for 19 years, every day we'd dutifully provide a clean bowl of water for him.

He'd usually drink out of glasses & cups - either by shoving his whole face in or dipping his paw in and licking the water off. He'd also sit in the sink or bath waiting for one of his human-slaves to turn the tap on. He could also be found head-first down the toilet. Minger.

Our latest cat also drinks from the tap but is currently in a cage after a knee op. He has a bowl of water in there. I've seen him use it twice in about a month. Apart from his food there's no other source of water.

We tried a water fountain. It was ignored.

Do you have any recommendations?

I've been considering this for a little while as if nothing else it might be harder for Freya to send flying.

oh yeah, ours does that too! Actually pretty funny when he's trying to get to the last little bit of water at the bottom of a pint glass 🤣

that looks good, guessing that's the original product because there are loads of unbranded ripoffs on Amazon and, judging by the reviews, fakes too, so will buy direct off Amazon!!

Says it's USB powered so you could probably mod it with a cheap PIR sensor or even a chip reader so it only activated as the cats approached.
