mods - Yes, i know this is a thinly disguised advert but it also a possibly entertaining thread so please bear with it. this is not meant to be a pure willy waving exercise. All of my cars are worth less than $5K and probably less than £10K in total.

The point of this thread is to show you can get the car of your childhood dreams if you wait long enough.

I always fancied the old Scimitars and now I own one. Just £150

[img] [/img]

I remember the AMG Hammer. It was a 2 door version of the Mercedes S Class with a 5.6 litre engine. This became the Mercedes CL. I now own a Mercedes CL 6 litre V12 AMG.

When I was in my mid teens TVRs were all the rage and there was a TVR dealer in myh home town where i spent too much time. I now have this which *advert alert* is now for sale. ( http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3768522.htm)

I still need to get a Maserati, Ferrari Dino (I know it isn't a Ferrari) and an Alpine 110. No real hope of affording any of them in the foreseeable future.

Not quite the one I always wanted but it's still got that badge.

Always fancied a scimitar though.

ooh a Scimitar nice idea

Hillman Imp (honestly) i think i was 5 or 6 and used to walk past one on way to school everyday - remembering that in those days they were rallying them and they had a unique rear opening hatch

sadly no longer with us sold it as had no where to keep it

You're probably joking, but I always loved the 80s Aerodeck. I did get one later in life and it was lovely. Gave it to my bro-in-law when it got to 120000 miles.
Can't do a link, But some good pics and a vid, here http://karakullake.blogspot.co.uk/2010/09/honda-accord-aerodeck.html

Not quite as a kid, but I remember reading about, and then sitting in at the motor show, the original Honda Integra Type-R. Few years later and with some share options cashed in I bought one of the very last ones. Kept it for 5 years - probably my favourite car I've owned.

Classic Alfa spider. Massively disappointing. Mine was last of the line low mileage and in top condition. Horrid thing to drive, broke all the time, just didn't fall in love with it. Traded it for a more modern gtv spider. Did 100k in it loved every minute, and despite the reputatatiion it did not go seriously wrong once.

TVR fitted with a new hood so it doesn't leak. I know that ruins it's originality but saves the leather.

Integra Type-R - ME TOO. I bought one. Only brand new car I have ever bought. I ran it for 120,000 miles as my daily driver. Finally died at 150,000 through my stupidity and oil starvation. I reckon above 35% or the miles were at above 7,000rpm. My favorite car EVER that I have owned.

Like being slapped with a diamond bracelet compared to the TVR being hit with a gold bar.

TVR griffith.. Started with a 350i but spent 8k keeping it on the road in a year and decided that was for mugs... Do a few years later I bought a "good" Griff. Awesome fast car. Recently swapped for something actually even better. 911 C4S.

When I turned 17 I started looking at cars in a different way than before. I really, _really_ starting wanting a mk1 Ford Escort Mexico.

I've never owned one and probably never will.

The same with a Land Rover. Love them, Always have done and always will, but I refuse to buy one. My knees don't fit in them and they are slow, noisy and expensive. I know I will always be underneath it too.

A Sierra Cosworth. In fact I really wanted to take a Cosworth engine and drop it into our family Sierra estate for RWD hoonery.

Pug 306 GTi-6. I nearly gave up on that and aimed lower, at a Fiat Bravo GTi (or whatever the designation was), but decided I should bite the bullet and bought a GTi-6 in black with full leather and alcantara. Loved it.

Early Mustang, me and me Dad bought a 1967 289 convertible which we co owned for 10 years and spent a small fortune on doing up, lovely car to drive and a head turner, but the drum brakes were a bit rubbish. We sold it at a loss when he moved to Spain and had to get rid, my financial input had ended by this time, so it was all on him to sell and we didn't get much return out of it, they sell for a lot more now.

Easy...when I was a nipper, my (by ten years) older bro had a Mk1 Golf GTI in helios blue. I grew up wanting one...when I turned twenty three I bought myself a last of the line Mk2 Golf GTI 16v in helios blue.

It is still the greatest car I have ever owned and the second most entertaining I've ever driven after a Corrado VR6. I nearly bought another recently too.

Hankered after an RS2000 or Mexico, but due to a DR10 pushing up insurance premiums I ended up getting a tarted up 1600 Sport on an 1100cc log book. 😀 Mucho fun.

the son of the md @ the business nextdoor, when i was 15 and working part time as a saturday lad @ a fruit and veg shop, let me sit in his tvr chimaera. i bought mine at 26 and ragged it for ~ 50k miles. 😀

the lab tech at my school had a scirocco scala 1.8 carb in met blue i walked past every day for 3 years. i had a met silver 1600 GT, then bought the scala from the retired lab tech 18months later.

putting an aerial atom through a 5 bar gate on a test drive cured me of sports cars. 🙂
mostly. 😀

I wanted a 147 GTA too! I did used to have a 156 V6 and I have a 147 now, but it's a Twin Spark. I couldn't afford to put petrol in it otherwise.

The RX7 is one of the nicest looking cars to come from the Far East. Hard to believe it first saw the light of day twenty years ago this year, it just looks so right. Much prettier than the awkward looking NSX.

nice. pretty basic by today's standards of course. both mine were mk2s. the later one ended up with uprated, adjustable gas shocks, and new bushes all round, courtesy of tsr performance in bridgewater, which made it handle supremely IMO.

the chim had similar enhancements that made it behave better than a mk2 elise i tried. in fact the elise scared the crap out of me cornering at speed, whereas a 111s mk1 elise i tried felt very planted, and i could throw it around with confidence. it always puzzled me when the elise boys talked about upgrading to mk2 suspension!

I fitted gas shocks and uprated bushes to my Golf in the end and it felt really good, but my missus at the time had a bog-standard "G" reg Golf 16v and it felt absolutely amazing through the bends, very compliant but with oodles of grip. Shame she wrote it off.

I drove my Golf GTI and a Pug 106GTI back to back one afternoon and was surprised to note that the steering, gearchange and chassis adjustability in the Golf had the edge.

Never tried and Elise or TVR though, wouldn't mind a go if I had the funds. The Elise is my idea of the ultimate sports car for modern times - lightweight, efficient and economical. You don't necessarily need a massive engine to give you performance. Although an Elise with an Alfa V6 would be truly awesome.

hmmmm. mebee. in the sleaze it's all over come 80 mph really, which follows the original lotus ethos - handling and lightweight, at 'sensible' speeds. i never drove a toyota powered one. sure they're good fun, but more tvr like i imagine.
think if i was going that way again i'd just go '7'. not measurably less practical than the elsie, and more focused if you like. that may just be me though.

I remember watching top gear as a lad and seeing the S class mercs and how they represented the pinnacle of car design, and thinking that was something I needed in my life. Currently got an S65, it's everything I thought it would be.

Fake edit: oh and an e30 M3 that got nicked 🙁 I was mugged in the street for the keys it was a pretty bad experience. Never replaced it but a few years later picked up an early e46 M3 CSL which was pretty special.

Flying Ox - beautiful car.

Always planned on an rx7, preferably one of the ltd edition barthurst models after growing up just down the road from a mint example. The noise it made at full throttle was fantastic and is responsible for a life long dream.

Will need to wait till I get s proper garage before I would realistically consider it though.

. it always puzzled me when the elise boys talked about upgrading to mk2 suspension!

Upgrading a mk1 to mk2 suspension is just a damper change. Its definitely for the better too, quite and more controlled . The planted feel of the s1 is down to a better Geo and wider front wheels. A stock s2 is setup to understear as this is more forgiving to thee average driver.

TVR Chimaera - Always used to wind down my window and listen to them drive by and the guy that owned Sharrocks Cycleworld in Ecclestone (anyone remember them?) had a TVR 350 when I used to work there at 15.

Got one when I was 24 and loved it! Had some amazing weekends away in it and even commuted into central London with it for 6 months. Sold it and bought an M3 which was far more reliable and much quicker in the real world, but just nowhere near as much fun.

Never been into cars, but I do remember a long-ago conversation with an ex-girlfriend who asked what I'd be driving and where I'd be living when I knew I'd got to where I wanted to be in life.

I remember saying I'd be driving a really nice Landrover or Range Rover, with a big rack for snowboards, space in the back for bikes and hopefully be living in the Alps.

Just bought this 😀 :

After spending a few months on this very forum, I developed a strange desire for a Skoda Octavia Diesel Estate, which I now own! 🙂

Oh yes, and I did eventually get around to owning a couple of Subaru Imprezas, the latter one being a WRX PPP, which was an absolute hoot but cost so, so much to run...

Some lovely cars in this thread, but I'm with Kayak,I never aspired to car ownership,it was always bikes for me...and especially Ducatis. A local lad had a very yellow and very loud 450 Desmo. Then on my first visit to Mallory Park,I saw a black and gold 900 SS and was smitten. Never owned either of those, but had a 500 Pantah when I was 21. Ace!

Sights were set fairly low, so the main car of my childhood dreams (the MG Midget) wasn't terribly hard to attain. Bit of disappointment in reality sadly, but at least I did it - and I'm glad I did. The MG ZT that I had a few years ago was nicer than a lot of people gave credit for too. Still got the umbrella from that. 😉

^^ i know of someone who has one sitting in his garage. i think he sees it as his retirement money.

i remember going down the A13 doing over 140mph. silly car!

i'd like a Westfield or Seven. fun car. can strap a bike to the roll cage. two seats.

or a Lupo 1.3ltr diesel that'll do 70mpg.....

Allways had a thing for rally cars. Had a love affair with nissans pulsar gti-r. Bought one in 2001. ugliest car on the road but was so quick. Loved every second of my 8 year ownership. Also had a Bathurst edition rx7.
Never had the lambo posters on the wall. Mainly been jap cars.
