My roll call of shite

’81 Metro HLS – Awful.
'82 Escort 1.3 pop – Ace, but cruelly taken from this world by the large truck that drove into it.
‘85 Golf 1.3 – Awful.
’91 Citroen AX GT – Fabulous but impractical.
’99 Fiat Bravo HLX – Good fun until it fell apart.
’05 Vectra – Dull but practical. Lots of bits have snapped, burst or fallen off it though this year.

Series 3 Landrover 109 ex military 1982reg - Chassis was mostly rust - ended up welding the back foot and half of the chassis back together from plate steel! So thirsty and noisy too, but alot of fun.
110 300tdi Landrover (engine taken out of a discovery) 1989reg - tonka toy with a lift and snorkel and big tyres. Also required much welding, although less than the previous one. Also had a penchant for eating timing belts a little worryingly.
1.6 Seat Toledo 2000reg. Inherited from my parents. Dull but practical. Got to 125000 miles and partexed it.
Audi A3 2.0tdi 2004reg currently. Most recent purchase, got uber cheap, has numerous problems (over boosting turbo, dodgy EGR valve, gearbox went a month ago etc) but its very quick and pretty economical (bar the gearbox). Looking forward to fiddling with it over the summer to fix all the problems.

Wish I still had a Landrover but doesn't make very much financial sense!

Allegro - puke colour, front wing held on with gaffer tape and crossed fingers
Xantia - ex works car, loved it despite the rep, flooded road was deeper than I thought, insurance paid out more than it cost me two years previous
Nissan Micra, old style, one hand on the steering wheel the other holding an oil can...
escort estate TD, 160k on the clock when I got it, awful
Mondeo
Company Mondeo
Vectra estate, huge boot - very useful for storing the trim as it falls off...

Peugot 106 Rallye 1.3 (ace fun!)
Peugeot 309 GTi (best balanced FWD car ever I reckon)
Peugeot 306 GTi-6 (quick, seriously quick, massive lift off oversteer!)
Citroën Xantia 2 litre turbo (bit of a departure but needed something cheap for transporting bikes to the alps)
Citroën Saxo forte 1100cc (needed cheap to run after the Xantia!)
BMW E34 520i Touring (big, comfy, plenty of big space)
BMW E90 320D Saloon (only company car I've had, nice but saloon was PITA)
VW Golf Mk3 1.9TDi (again needed cheap transport, seriously economical and reliable though)
BMW E34 540i Touring (with 6 speed manual box! Loved that car, was gutted I had to sell it, lost my job, fortunately still had the Golf TDi)
VW Passat 1.9TDi saloon (Golf got too small, reliable car, but slooow and not that practical)
VW Passat 1.9TDi Estate (much more practical, quicker too cos of higher hp engine. Until it seized that is!)
Audi A4 Avant 2.5TDi Quattro (reasonably quick, very comfy, not as spacious as the Passat, but I like so far. Should be good in winter... Now if only diesel was cheaper!)

And that's it so far... As you can see, in my youth it was all French, then I went all German in my mid-late 20's...

1999 Ford KA - did 100k miles and was then sold for £750 to a mate, it died shortly after. Great car though, simple to fix, fun to drive.
2005 Renault Megane 1.5 DCi - 100k miles so far and a good few "interesting" electrical problems. It's having it's MoT done at the moment so I hope it is OK.

I tend to keep cars until they die or are very close so my history is somewhat limited.

1998 Vauxhall Corsa - shoddy £700 piece of crap that I drove for a few months over one winter, then part ex'ed for £600 against a

2001 Citroen Berlingo - awesome piece of French engineering. Totally bottom of the range, but it swallowed bikes whole and picked it's own lines round corners...and was therefore ace. It's lack of refinement/comfort meant I recently (and sadly) got rid of it for a

2006 Vauxhall Zafira - Less flamboyance than the Berlingo (probably a good thing when it comes to handling), more comfortable, more economical, not as great fir bikes (though it got 3 of us + bikes + kit + camping stuff to France last month OK). Has an air of 'middle agedness' about it though 😕

'83 Talbot Alpine 1.6. Inherited from my dad for my 18th birthday. Rotbox, but a decent first car. Poo brown paint. Babypoo brown interior. Stylin...!

'87 mkII Astra Van 1.3. Inherited from my grandfather who thought it might last me 6 months. Got 4 years out of it and sold it on for £400....

'93 mkIII Astra Estate, 1.7TDi. Actually a brilliant car. Cavernous, economical and daftly good off road.

'99 Passat Sport TDI110 estate. First taste of luxury. Easy 50mpg, good bike carrier and impressively good mile muncher. Sometimes still wish I had it.

'05 BMW 320D Msport tourer. SOOO much better to drive than the Passat, but not quite as economical or practical. That all gets forgotten though as soon as I get an empty bit of A- or B-road.

The hall of fame/shame!

C reg Fiat Uno 1.1l first car - killed it!
H reg Peugeot 205 1l - killed that in the end too.
Brief sabatical from driving including a 6 month enforced one (I'm not proud of it)
V reg Peugeot 206 1.1l - recently sold it as the Head Gasket was on it's way out.
52 Reg Peugeot 206 1.4l - on loan from my Mum till I've banked some cash, the plan is to finally drive a decent car and get a Civic type R later in the year.

Past

1984 Vauxhall Nova 1.3 SR
1988 Vauxhall Nova 1.2 Merit, with a 2 Litre 16v engine, gearbox and brake conversion from a Cailbra. Still kept the 1.2 badges, the only giveaway was 14" alloys to accomodate the brakes, a larger bore exhaust and lower ride height. Lots of torque-steer, but could out accelarate a 911!
1988 VW Golf GTI Convertible
1986 Ford Escort RS Turbo
1991 Renaut Clio Cup racing car
1993 Ford Escort XR3i
1994 Ford Escort RS2000
1992 VW Golf VR6
1988 BMW E30 M3 - Left hand drive, fantastic handling and induction noise. Wish I still has it as they're worth a fortune now.
1988 BMW E30 M3 - As above
1989 BMW E30 M3 Evo II - As above, but with 20 more bhp and different aero package, only 500 built. Now worth about 3 times what I sold it for...
1998 Citroen Xsara VTS - Awfull car, loads of electrical faults (the loom rubbed where it went through the bulkhead and caused a minor fire), terribly notchy gearbox - nice engine though!
1996 Ford Escort RS2000 - sounded like an old BDA engined escort with modified induction and a straight through exhaust. The best of the FWD escorts, shame about the rust.

Current

2002 MG ZS 180 - Bought the week MG went bust for £2500 at 3 years old with 25k on the clock. Is actually a great car as the chassis is essentially the same as a Honda Integra DC2, but with a lightweight all alloy V6 under the bonnet. Thanks to an MG forum I've been able to keep it running as it should without too many dramas.

1995 BMW M3 Convertible - Was my dream car since I saw several Drum & Bass Dj's leaving Dreamscape 20 in them. The sound of the six cylinder engine is fantastic with the roof down. Still looks good to me.

2006 Skoda Octavia VRS (petrol) - Sensible family car, comfortable, quiet, massive boot and will do high 30's mpg on a run. Good for surprising a few reps in their diesel Audi A4's and BMW 3 series.

Owned only:

Citroen Dyane - like a 2CV only not as stylish. Really.

Many years pass. Works vehicles etc.

Ford Sierra.

Volvo 440. Worst car I have ever owned. Sweating just thinking about it, and I couldn't afford to get rid.

MX5. Wonderful car. Want another now to play in & with, but also have a hankering for something British and unreliable for the same purpose for a change.

Lotus Elise. Traded in the 5 for something with a little more poke.

Got married had children 🙂

Seat Leon Cupra. Well, it seemed sensible after Mr Chapmans finest.

More children 🙂

Toyota Corolla Verso. Bland and dull, but in a good way.

Ford Capri 1.6 GL (1979)

Ford Astra - green with "spray graphics" - when I part-exed it, HPI should it to be a written off crash/burn. I did notice the vents looked a bit melted. And it had the wrong colour interior.

Rover 416 - (1994) - spent £600 on a recon gearbox and then a day later the cam belt snapped at 60mph. DEAD.

Rover 25 (2000)

Hyundai Coupe 2.0SE (2003)

Hyundai Tucson - present

Passed my licence 10 years ago, but was a student for a chunk of that. Hence, my only cars have been (in Mrs PixelMix's name):

- Nissan Micra (suprisingly good, very reliable, nippy round town and round twisty roads, but out of power on motorways with bikes on the back)
- Mk 3 VW Scirocco 2.0 TDI - Comfy cruiser, or twisty road rocketship. Good fun, and still get 50mpg, although I wish I could afford to run the 211bhp 2.0 petrol.

Apparently our next car will "need" to have 5 doors, so I'm thinking Golf GTI or GTD.

Some serial car swappers up there!

Quite dull that I've only owned five cars in nearly 15 years of driving. Don't know how some people put up with the hassle of buying and selling all the time.

Funnily enough, out of my list only 4 were actually sold! The rest died or were traded in (luckily through brother in the trade).

Hahahaha... I had to replace the 5's GTI turbo twice (both under warranty) but the spine was intact until I span it off the road in the wet and ended upside down in a field.. At the time I laughed, now I ache, hahaha. It was fast though.. I do have fond memories of it chasing my mates down country lanes in thier XR3's and Astra GTI's.. Oh how the giggles ensued and the tyres burned rubber. The switches I recall were pants and the gearstick kept jamming in 2nd.. Good car though, great laugh far better fun than the XR2 that followed on..

That's fairly consistant with my one and only experience with one. Dunno if it was just the one I drove or not, but it had a vicious, massive turbo that came in all at once but had turbo lag of about a fortnight. Accelerating you'd think "man, this is really slow" until the turbo had finished taking a deep breath, then you'd suddenly get an almighty kick in the kidneys and have to hold on for dear life.

I'm reasonably convinced that the most common expiry method for Renault 5 GT Turbos was teenagers accelerating hard through tight bends and then abruptly finding themselves in a nearby field rotating gently on their roof.

Loopy, loopy motor.

All since passing test in 1991; all bar the 156 were at least 1 year old when I bought them; the 156 was a 3 month old ex demo. Lovely car

Which is why I always wanted one. But not ever having one, I would say the XR2 I had was fantastic (until I put THAT upside down).

end of an era - the twinkly dave green machine is gone .... - gone are the days of you arriving at races on an RAC flatbed

Aww don't, I really miss that thing! Surefooted and tough enough to drive through Glencoe in January past many an upside down 4x4 and (accidently) drive up a bridleway in the lakes past a lot of shocked looking off-roaders 😀

Bikes are much more fun than cars anyway, and a damn sight cheaper, although the gap seems to be closing!!

I was about to add my 1967 Ford Anglia for the win, but I see Kiwijohn has beaten me by two years (it was over 20 years old when I got it, btw, and I had my full NZ licence aged 15 what foolish madness)

Followed by 1971 Ford Falcon (also more than 20 years old but ran surprisingly well, 3 speed column change and all)

Then in the UK:
VW Jetta (awful)
Saab (black and cool)
Renault Kangoo (very practical and sadly missed but I see it around)

Now just have motorbike while I save for a new car.

My brother had an Anglia as his car. He wanted the Mini, but I had the cash.
Only ones I miss are the first Capri, the L200 & maybe the Corona. I did like the 306 & 309, but they were both unreliable.

Mini - £200 in "Tundra"
VW Polo breadvan
VW Golf Ryder 1.4
VW Vento TDI
Mazda 6 Estate TD
Audi A6 Estate (W)

current:
Honda CRV (W)
VW Eos Sport TDI

I still miss the VW Vento - drove 140K miles in that car and it never let me down and averaged 56mpg. HUGE boot for family use. I have the badge and plate on the wall in the garage. Next car will probably be a Toyota iQ. As I now commute by bike again. W = wife's
