What's the best option for getting someone else insured on your own car for 4-6 weeks? Just add them to my current policy, or take out a new policy with one of the insurance companies that offer temporary insurance.

I've been through this a few times - always been easiest/cheapest to add them to the existing policy.

But seeing as it takes 5 mins to get quotes, why not just get some quotes and see whos cheapest?

It depends on a number of factors. Do they have a full U.K. drivers license?
On my insurance adding a third driver for a whole year was less expensive than for a single week two years ago. I have kept him on ( my brother) as it made the premium lower the following year-and yes, I have no idea why either.
When adding my sister to my fathers insurance for a fortnight last year it was no charge (she has an Italian licence) but she had a much larger excess
When my brother added his 25 year old son on his wife’s car for two weeks it was about £60 IIRC

Son just passed his driving test but is only back from uni for a few weeks (well, depending on any new lockdowns) and won't have a car when back at uni so we have just taken out temporary insurance with Veygo... quick and easy

We'll consider insuring on our insurance when it comes up for renewal

If you add them to your policy “permanently” then it can often work out cheaper than a temporary additional driver for the sort of timescales you’re looking at

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll look into the options based on your suggestions.

Just remember that if they have a crash and they are named on your insurance it is your premium that is going to be affected come renewal.

It may be a bit more expensive to take out a temporary, standalone policy but at least that way any accident doesn't affect your cover. For that length of time I'd want the person covered in their own right.
