Go direct it will be cheaper. Churchill and Aviva + others dont use them.

I hit Go Compare, Confused and Compare the Market, as per the MSE advice. By then I'm losing the will to live so I may or may not try some of the few that don't show up on comparison sites.

Go direct it will be cheaper.
- it never has been for me.

I recently renewed my car insurance through go compare. I haven't tried going directly to any companies for years but gave a couple a go out of curiosity. Aviva and direct line. Both were a couple of hundred quid more expensive for the same level of cover through go compare. I also tried compare the market but the quotes were roughly £30 more from the same companies.
I never pick the cheapest quote though. I rightly or wrongly pick an insurer I have heard of like m&s or quick fit. I also refuse to use a company who use shorten their name like carinsurance4u etc.

Use compare site of choice. Open cashback site of choice in second window to cross reference which insurer towards the top on the compare site is giving the best cashback. Then click through cashback direct to insurer. Requires typing in the details again but never failed to save a tidy sum.

I gave up on them, as their rubbish @ adding on anything extra to a basic policy & you end up being bombarded with crap, due to the info you give out. The recommendation/top listing for me ended up being companies with customer reviews edging towards 'hate' & the price changes completely when you add on NCB protection/lower excess & other options. I just ring 4 of the bigger insurers now & go with one of them. I've found having a decent insurance company to back you up, is more worthwhile than saving a few pounds, when you do have an accident

Tend to use the usual comparison sites to get an idea but have never actually purchased via any of them

It's tedious but if price is important you have to go direct and enter your details every fricken time for the insurers that aren't on the comparison sites (Aviva, Direct Line, More Than etc etc)

They blow like the wind but at least one of them will have a price that beats all the others and the money you've saved can be spent on bike parts

...having a decent insurance company to back you up, is more worthwhile than saving a few pounds, when you do have an accident
And basically this ^^

NFU are another that don't come up on the comparison sites but have an excellent reputation and good pricing.

Not much help if you're in a city though, however they do cover postcodes in smaller towns so not just for the country set.

I find Confused to be consistently cheaper than the others. However this year I used a broker (Chris Knott Insurance) who were almost £100 cheaper than the comparison sites for our hot hatch. They also beat the comparison sites by £20 for our other car.

As said above check out the companies who are not on these sites , Directline for example .

Google's own was best for me (including going direct to those not on comparison websites)
