I am currently stripping a car down. I want to remove some parts before scrapping it and i want to keep the damper inserts, springs and driveshafts of a front wheel drive car.

I have the old springs to throw back in there to enable it to be rolled but if i drain the gear box and pull the driveshafts out,how rollable/steerable will it be? Its never going to start again but it needs to roll and steer to get it in a position to load onto a trailer or maybe tow it to the scrappy.
Would i be right in thinking that it would roll fine without being a danger while i tow it minus the shafts?

Assuming macphereson strut car, without the shock inserts you have nothing to hold the springs in a semi compressed state, no camber or castor control due to the lack of control over the strut/spring top position and braking will rip the springs out, rotate the hub carriers aroundt he lower ball joint and shear them off.

Bad times.

If it were just minus the shafts you'd still have the problem that the front shafts bolt the front bearings together, so your wheels risk parting company from the spindles.

Just call a scrappy that'll pick it up, many still do and will pay you for it.

Yeah i remember now,got ya. I would have to put the old inserts back in there to wind the top nut down after compressing the springs. I have taken them out about 4 years ago but cant picture the job in my head. I might refit the old inserts and springs.. and say goodbye to the driveshafts as the labour in getting a garage to strip it, is going to cost what those parts are worth.

I still have abs sensors and drop links that cost me around 300 quid to remove so that should take an hour or so.Theres springs, inserts and heaps of other bits that are still in fine condition. Just seems mad binning it all when i plan on getting another in the future.

cheers for the help!

Driveshafts will come out fine providing you're not towing it (probably fine anyway but risky), just trailer it.

Simple answer is don't bin it, SORN it, remove bits when you get new one and call a breaker to come get it.
