Had my car serviced and mot'd on Wednesday all good and passed.
My mechanic said the battery level was really low so he topped up with battery juice water about 600ml he also said the battery will need changing soon.
Went to start this eve and it's completly flat!
Could adding the battery juice water thingy cause this to happen ?
If I ask him he's gonna say yes !
Many thanks in advance

I haven't seen a battery that you can easily top up in years, not that it's unheard of, just less popular nowadays.

Anyway, assuming that he used correct fluid, batteries that need topping up are usually on the way out, 600ml is a big top up.

I'd say it was probably time for a change.

battery is knackered. It is not the fault of the garage. Shell out on a decent bosch or varta if you plan to keep the car.

If it's the battery just get a new one as they are not that expensive.

Mine goes flat if I do not start my car for 3 days.

I jump start it cable to cable several times now so not big deal.

i doubt the water fubbarred the battery or affected it much but it may have been the straw that broke the camels back.

Just get a new one whatever the cause nothing you can do now will remedy it without the purchase of a new battery

I always get Bosch Silvers. Helps that I have a Costco card though as not found anywhere cheaper for them.

Hm,

Doesn't a top-up battery basically dilute sulphuric acid? So if the electrolyte is stupid low and you add water, it's then too diluted to work properly?

Or am I talking complete cheese? It's been a while.

yes but one without enough water will boil dry and is a fire risk.

I dont think you can get 600ml in a battery.

Makes me laugh when some says not that expensive at something that is £60. Different world.

600ml in a battery is damn near a miracle: expect to have to buy a new one shortly!

I think you are correct however pH is a logarithmic scale of hydrogen ions I seem to remember (correct me if I'm wrong) hence the little water does not actually reduce the concentration much. Something like that!

TheBrick...against the cost of running a car 60 quid for a battery every 5 to 8 years is nowt.
Car batterys are a classic area where the maxim buy cheap buy twice applies.

I understand that TJ could recommend a cheaper form of transport.

😉

Yeah I suppose cheap in that sense, but still no a insignificant chunk of change.

indeed it is a fair sum, cars are expensive.
I also use bosch silver from Costco. The one for my volvo was 98 quid, but they last at least half a decade.

Would much rather spend the 60 quid in waitrose. ;-£

I ordered a Varta for the mrsss Yaris last September from
http://www.battery2u.co.uk/

Price was good & it arrived when they said it would (they offer next day delivery but I asked them to delay it 2 days & they did exactly that).

You'll spend a lot more on a chainset once a year and think nothing of it.

£60 every 5-10 years is a bargain... secondhand is just as likely to fail soon, so why bother?

I'm not upset I have to buy a battery that's part of the luxury of owning a car.

I cant work out as to why it stopped working like that ? its never even shown signs of going flat. filled up with battery juice water hey presto it stops working ! thats what I cant work out

Maybe there was corrosion between cells but out of the fluid level
once filled up the fluid then could access differing cells and make the battery fail

I was once told (possibly wrongly)that the acid and water stay in two layers, with some intermixing, because the liquids have different specific gravity. The volume of liquid helping to keep the plates cool to prevent buckling.

very wrongly, perfectly miscable. in fact making pure h2so4 with no water would be the hard part.

I was always sceptical but never investigated the subject. For me a battery works great. A battery does'nt work get a new one. The warranty on a battery is what alters the price I got one for a work vehicle and was givern the option of a 1,2,or 3 year guarantee same battery big difference in cost

By adding that much, its probably warped the plates so wont take any charge now. Bin it (in green responsible manner of course) and go to the local scrappies and get one from there. Usually come with a year long guarantee as well as being cheaper.

Car batteries will just die suddenly. If the voltage drops too low, it will not charge again.

Little-known thing: Halfords bateries are made by Yuasa and are one of the best batteries you can get. Phone around and get a cheap quote for a 3 year warranty cheapo then walk in and demand they price match. they always do and you get a premium battery for budget price 😆
