can anyone recommend me a solicitor?

as it says above, contract law - but obviously I don't want to go into any detail on a public (social media?) forum

If it's (small) business related, can I suggest talking to IPSE ( https://www.ipse.co.uk) and they might be able to help get you in contact with someone?

They're brilliant - can't imagine being in business without them

This is supposed to be a helpful comment: "contract law" isn't actually a terribly specific area. When you're calling/looking around (I don't mean on here), you might find it more helpful to mention the industry or activity eg contract for construction of house, franchise agreement, employment contract, contract for the sale of goods...

On the upside, because just about every lawyer ought to be able to understand the basics of your problem and point you in the right direction.

Yep, IPSE is a good start for that.

Do you have some kind of professional / contract insurance? Providers of those may have a helpline for issues like this, or may even be something you can claim on.

Sounds like you are trying to go work direct for a company after working for them through agency? You meed to have envoked the extended period of hire at beginning of contract OR be out of contract with the firm for over x weeks to go back, x must be defined in tbe agencies terms.

yes Steve in a nutshell but there's more to it than that. Agency and client have fallen out over a major cock-up by the agency. Can't say any more at this stage

The guy you are looking for is an employment lawyer with a commercial mix to his practice rather than pure tribunal work at an educated guess .

If the client wants you to stay they can set their lawyers on to it, can't they?

Perhaps even give you an indemnity in case the agency comes after you?
