We will be in touch
After several successful(!) camping trips last summer, we've planned a few more this year. We cooked basically last year but struglled as no cool box/fridge. We're camping at sites with hook ups and will be taking a car so potentially power from that too?
Any advice on a smallish fridge/cool box - to cater for me, wife, and 2 young kids? What should we look out for, avoid etc?
Ta
I have one in the garage but I have painted the floor so can't get to it to give you details. From memory
It runs on main, cigarette lighter or camping gaz. V useful to have all the options.
It actually gets cold enough to make ice cubes (just) when run on electric, not so good on gas.
Great for wine and beer when camping, does anyone like warm white wine and beer?
The more full it is, the better it keeps stuff cool. Doesn't use as much gas as I expected but it 'might' drain your car battery if left plugged in from Portsmouth to Santander on the ferry.
Excellent bit of kit and used as a extra fridge at home at Christmas.
Where are you based? You can probably borrow mine if you want a test run.
thanks for the offer ... looks like one of our buddy's is going to lend us theirs
Just in case you do buy one, don't bother with a 12v coolbox. Ours will flatten the car battery within 6 hours, and its a big diesel battery, so its only useful whilst the engine is running. Luckily we found this out the easy way as we were camping on a hill, and I could just get the car moving fast enough to bump it 🙂
Look for one of the 3 way camping fridges, most are like a mini chest freezer. You shouldn't run them on gas inside a car though as they need good ventilation.
If that doesn't work out or you go off the hook up route I highly recommend one of the coolboxes made by Maxcold or Coleman "Extreme". They've got some in Costco I think. Keep feeding it icecubes - bag or two a day or so and it will keep things as cold as you like.
