Where is the site? Is it safe? Are our bikes going to get stolen?
I know there was a similar thread on here a while back but I can't find it now.
Usually drive across to wales bike for the day and drive back all in the one day - 600mile round trip.
Fancy driving down the night before, so can start fresh and early the next day.
Anyone done it and lived to tell the tale?
Cheers
from memory, there are a few very slopey tent spots at afan, or the campsite behind the main building at glyncorrwg.
Bikes will want to be locked up in cars parked next to your tents; there has been history of bikes going walkabout in the past - not sure how recently this last happened.
Not sure of the situation with the drop-off cafe now, but you used to be able to sit in the bar for a nice meal and lots of beers before turning in for the night - most pleasant 🙂

Cheers,
I thought I'd heard also about bikes being stolen - even cars being broken into to get to them. Think I'd probably want to hand-cuff myself to the bike and sleep with it in the tent. 😕
We stopped at Glyncorrwg in early April, site was quite busy even then, so imagine it'll be heaving now (assuming the forecast isn't shit).
Police cycled through and drove round a couple of time, seemingly more as a reassurance exercise for the campers than expecting to find bike thieve's
(unless they know the local scallies to look out for).
We stopped at our tent rather than wandering off down the pub/local social club, so were pretty happy that nowt would happen, that and we had the bikes in a very secure transit van. I personnally wouldn't be happy leaving the bike on display in the back of a car or even hidden in the tent & leaving the site.
There is talk that the bike shop will allow you to store you bike in there secure container, but I also heard they tend to unlock it in the morning and leave it open for anyone can wander in (Ask/ring at the shop & ask the details if you fancy this option)
Give these a ring:

Margam Park is only 20 mins from Afan, and you can even cycle there via the forestry service roads.
We strayed into the village (last year) and a group of lads attacked us. Very funny. They were about 10. 😆
They'd be 11 now, so you should be OK for another couple of years 😉
All good stuff thanks.
Not sure we'd actually leave the site at any time - would probably get there late saturday afternoon/evening (assume might have to arrange for late arrival?) then up early Sunday to do a bit of biking.
At the moment leave home at 4.30am, pick up mate from london around 6.00am get to the trails etc. about 10.00/10.30. Needless to say I'm knackered before we've even started. And the drive home the same day is probably dangerous. (thank heavens for the rumble strips)
there is a bike lock up at afan now, so you can leave them out of site and also you no longer need to keep them in the car overnight. ask at reception. a security chap also patrolled the area regularly.
we also popped in to the local rugby club bar about 300m left out of the camp site. very friendly and welcoming and stayed open quite late! handy since the 'drop off' no longer sells beers
Isn't there a less crime ridden site behind the visitor center at Afan
Funnily enough Monotokpoint we dont have a tent at the mo (nice and organised) and saw yours in the classifieds.
Like the look of it if a little big for the 2 of us.
Is the lock up at Afan or the Glyncorrwg (sp?)
Glyncorrwg I thought, dunno anything about the camping @ Afan
(though have never used the container)
Yep the lock up is at Glyncorrwg (and the camping). The cafe is open again for food now too
We stopped here last weekend. It's about twenty minutes drive away. But it's a nice campsite, 5 minutes walking distance to 3 pubs. One of which had the cheapest beer I've seen for years – a pint of bitter and a pint of stout was £4.55!
The camp site/facilities at Afan are safe enough providing you lock up but the showers are crappy, it's usually pretty midgey and the cafe is sadly a real under achiever.
Agreed, the showers are practically useless! Use the hose when washing your bike - warmer and more powerful!
