A friend's camcorder is borked after their kid dropped it into water, does the STW massive know whether or not the disks in them can be removed & connected to a PC to try and retrieve anything stored on them? I haven't even worked out what type of drive they use!

It's a Panasonic HDC-HS20 with an 80GB HDD if it makes a difference...

if it has a hard drive of course you can take it out. Just undo the screws and poke around. Reading it could go well if it has a regular FAT32 or UDF format. Give it a go. If it isn't working what is there to lose? Hard drives are pretty standard, so if you have the right caddy for it you'll be able to connect it to a PC/Mac.

It's the drive format i wasn't sure about, mainly as I saw a vid on youtube for a Sony one and they used as ZIF (?) format drive. Guess we'd just need an adaptor then. possibly?!

The partition format may or may not be proprietary. But I very much doubt the hardware is. It should just plug in to a PC (IDE / SATA), reading it might be a different matter.
