I'm looking to get a flash for the misses (no, not that sort of flash).
Any recommendations / things to look for in a flash? She's got a Nikon D60 if that makes a difference.
Budget - nothing too silly.
Thanks
What does she want it for? Will it be attached to the camera or does she want to use it remotely?
There was a thread about this recently & Nissin flashes were mentioned quite a lot as being a good choice.
Sigma flashes always seem to be a popular 'aftermarket' option.
I've got a Nikon D80 and am probably gonna treat myself to an SB-700 flash at the end of the month. It's quite a bit of cash, but I wanna use it 'off camera' and it seems to be a good solution.
If she wants to use it off camera, beware that the D60 doesn't have the ability to act as as master to an off camera flash (I think). To do this, you'll need an SB-700 minimum.
You can do this if you get some remote flash triggers, but I am not sure how it all works with regards to metering, flash outputs etc. and whether this still remains under the control of the camera or you have to do it manually.
To be honest, my knowledge of flashes is pretty limited (as the above will probably show), but hopefully this post will jump the thread up a bit and some of the more knowledgeable flash users will be along to help!!
You meter manually with simple (cheap) triggers and off camera flash. So the flash itself matters less, as it'll be in manual.
Basically it depends what you want out of the following, in roughly increasing order of cost:
Manual on camera
TTL on camera
Manual off camera (cheap wireless triggers)
TTL off camera (cord)
high speed sync (on camera)
wireless TTL with a commander flash (if the D80 can't act as one this will be expensive, as you need 2 flashes).
All singing all dancing wireless TTL etc etc
Got a Nissin Di466 here - cheap (£80) will do TTL on the camera, has a built in optical slave to trigger off any on-board flash, so you can try full manual off-camera with no other kit needed. I use it with some cheap wireless triggers though.
Cactus V4 triggers from Gadget Infiny - $40
Vivitar 285HV (I believe the design has now been bought by someone else) for about £65
So under £100 all in
I like it all manual so I can experiment: Flash position, power etc....
On a fairly low power and a slowish shutter speed. Flash on opposite side of trail, on the floor, in front of the rider
