Thinking of a new camera - probably something like a Canon G10 or G9 -

what sort of market is there for second hand cameras? Do they, like so many things, seem to halve in value within a year....?

I would like a 'semi DSLR' - good shots and adjustability, without the size and weight, and the ability for mrs_oab to point and shoot.

From my recent experience the secondhand market is fairly strong and prices certainly don't drop anything like 50%

Think you will pay strong money for a G9 or G10 and there are probably better value for money cameras out there.
Both fairly large and relatively heavy, the Panasonic LX3 gets good reviews and well worth a look

The G series cameras seem to hold their value fantastically well, so I wouldnt worry about making that much of loss when you sell it on tbh.

Will look at an LX3 - seems good.

Any idea of places to look for good second hand (rather than the dreaded ebay)

Ricoh GX100 is another one to consider. Lovely camera to use with lots of SLR-like controls as well as point-shoot options. Superb lens, especially for macro shots which are stunning.

Very customisable too.

Check whether they can shoot in RAW - I think the G9 and 10 do, as does the Nikon P6000. It does make a difference - assuming of course you can be bothered doing the post processing on the computer. You can play with pushing and pulling exposures, white balance etc far more easily with RAW (someone is going to tell me the world has moved on any second).

the LX3 is a superb little camera... quality is v good but as with all these cameras there will never be as good as a SLR.

I think the G10 would be perfect for you. I wanted a sort of "semi dslr" camera, and the G10 fits the bill (slightly bigger than a p&s, smaller than a dslr, more features than a p&s). I think the LX3 beats the G10 on image quality slightly, but it isnt as easily adjustable as the G10.

My father in law has a G10, hence the interest in that model - had a play and its great. My sister in law has a G7 as her point and shoot (and couple of proper DSLR's for her pro work), and she really rates them.

I will go and have a play with the Ricoh and Lumix as well - one review suggest the Ricoh is a very fast camera, which would be ideal for 80% of my photo's being sports and (fast moving) young family.....
